Did someone tell me X affects memory?!?

    Dance drug Ecstasy 'affects memory'
    Press Association
    Monday June 25, 2007 5:28 AM
The dance drug Ecstasy significantly affects both long and short-term memory, according to research.
A study found that verbal, not visual, memory is most affected by the drug, which sells in British clubs for as little as a few pounds per tablet.
Studies have previously noted Ecstasy affects memory, but the new research by the University of Hertfordshire examined 26 studies involving 600 users. Experts found the number of tablets taken over a lifetime had little effect on the results.
The average number of tablets taken by people in the study was 327, with a range of 16 to 902.
Professor Keith Laws and Joy Kokkalis, from the university's school of psychology, led the study, which will be published in the journal Human Psychopharmacology: Clinical and Experimental.
They found Ecstasy - a class A drug used by an estimated 500,000 people in the UK - had a medium to large effect on impairing short and long-term memory.
In more than three-quarters of Ecstasy users, long and short-term verbal memory was below the average of those who had not used the drug.
Dr Laws said: "To summarise, this meta-analysis confirms that Ecstasy users show significantly impaired short-term and long-term memory when compared with non-Ecstasy users.
"The Ecstasy users also displayed significantly worse verbal than visual memory.
"Indeed, their visual memory was relatively normal and seems to be affected more by concurrent cannabis use."

So you are saying these people are damaging themselves?

An AVERAGE of 327 rolls per person, holy shit, that is a lot of gum to buy.

apparently, whoever could remember taking 902 hits of x was not affected.

Tipp, is that paranoia? Too much ganj?

"This is a frightened city. Over these houses, over these streets hangs a pall of fear. Fear of a new kind of violence which is terrorizing the city. Yes, gangs of old ladies attacking defenseless, fit young men".

I've heard X dries up your spinal fluid.
Can't remember where I heard that.
I have a good memory. It just doesn't last very long.

Epidemiology did teach me that a sample size of 600 is very small. But my background in science is on the same level as your dedication to posting yesteryear's news.

Now I agree the sample seems small, but it took an analysis published this week of over 2 dozen studies to cobble that many subjects together .

Any old news you feel you knew must be based on much smaller samples.

    I stand corrected.

And back to the topic, this article here gives insight as to why it was hard to conduct this study.

The spinal fluid rumor is junk. Neurotoxicity from repeated use may be a problem, but the evidence suggests that it's dose and use dependent.

All the information you can possibly use:
    http://www.erowid.org/chemicals/mdma/mdma.shtml

    Including this very useful nugget:

"Pretreatment with fluoxetine (Prozac) or citalopram (Celexa) has been shown to block the neurotoxicity of MDMA (Battaglia, 1988; Schmidt 1987; 1990; Shankaran, 1999a), probably by blocking interactions of MDMA with SERT. More interestingly, fluoxetine remains almost fully protective if given 3 or 4 hours after MDMA."
    http://www.erowid.org/chemicals/mdma...tml#timecourse

    Even better:

"G.A. Gudelsky7 found that rats given extreme doses of MDMA (20mg/kg injected under the skin) had lasting damage to their serotonin system, but that rats given this same dose of MDMA with a very high dose of ascorbic acid (250mg/kg injected) showed no sign of serotonin damage."
