What shoes are you wearing when its snowy/icy? I've been in Altras for a while and they're great while they last but that sure isn't very long.

To the tights question, I've given up on men's running tights. They always seem to slip down, most don't have a drawstring and they're fucking expensive. Women's leggings are $10 at Costco, don't slip down, have drawstring, are warmer, softer and have good pockets. Nobody can tell you're wearing women's pants if you keep running.

Current trail shoe rotation here in MN:

    Hoka Stinson
    Hoka Speedgoat
    Altra Olympus
Brooks Caldera (just added/ yet to wear)

Switching it up helps avoid injuries imo

Use Kahtoola EXOspikes if gets too icy out.

we get some pretty wicked freeze thaws, so sometimes we need studs just to run on the road

I've got a pair of Solomon SpikeCross shoes that have studs built into the tread.
Since I only use them when I need them, I expect them to last a long time, they are much more stable/comfortable than slapping a pair of yaktrax

I also have a set of microspikes for when it really ices over

Love Altras but same experience with wear and they’re terrible on wet rocks and roots. I wear Topo now, Terraventures mostly. Excellent grip and the tread lasts a while and stays grippy.

Yaktrax Spikes are cheap from Costco and they’re good for packed snow and ice. I’m never not on the trail though. I imagine they’re not ideal on the pavement.
Remind me. We'll send him a red cap and a Speedo.

I've been thinking about moving over to NNormals for trail running and maybe getting exospikes for the icy days. Unfortunately there's nowhere within 200 miles to try on the shoes.

For pure snow/ice I'm a big fan of IceBug studded shoes. They're spendy, but not that much more than what a regular set of good trail shoes costs these days. Also, snow and ice just don't wear on things like dirt does. After several seasons of use mine show almost no sign of wear and I expect them to last many more years. IceBug's non-studded shoes with the RB9X rubber also grip pretty well on anything short of glare ice.

Studs can also be pretty great for mud, but suck for rock and pavement. So, for shoulder season use where it's dirt down low but snow/ice higher up I've decided I need to get some Kahtoola EXOspikes (https://kahtoola.com/traction/exospi...wear-traction/) so I can swap as needed.

I’ve been in Speedgoats for years but not as big of a fan of recent versions. The Fours are my fave and I bought bunch in my size when I realized the Five’s weren’t as much to my liking. Haven’t tried the Sixes.

Have a pair of goretex Speedgoats for super snowy days.

Recently got a pair of Topo ultraventures and Mtn Racers. Really liking them both. Probably wouldn’t use the ultras in snow but the Mtn racers have great grip.

As DTM mentioned I also have Kahtoola nano spikes.

Happy solstice. Dry trails are nice but feeling like we need some snow. Getting in the climbing while we can.

Dang, the trails look great. Here in Seattle, we don't have much snow and the trails are slop. Fun slop, but messy nonetheless. I've been getting out with my headlamp on dry evenings and mornings. Got a longer day planned for tomorrow on the only clearish day of the week.

Race of the year? For me USA gold & bronze with two favorites defeated in what was perhaps the most talented group of 1,500 meter runners in track history. What a race!

Cool video of the WURL, including good footage of some of the more sketchy spots.

I watched that one a while back. It's really good.

My partner is stuck in ATL on the way to CO to ice climb so I swung through Arches for a nice loop at the North end. What a great place to run! Crowds were minimal since it's the dead of winter.

Bit late to this question but I found a pair of Hoka Speedboat 5's with spikes that I've put about 80 miles on. Works great on the local trail that gets groomed for xc skiing. They aren't making them anymore but Hoka seems to still have some sizes available on their site.

Negative windchill running here in MN currently. Mixing it up running along Mississippi River (flat) and Lebanon Hills with the pup. Picked up some Craft soft shell Nordic pants that work well over tights at these temps. Side note- I find that I can get away with shorts if it is above freezing & calm and switch to tights down to zero. After some sucky (mentally & physically) health issues this summer, it feels good to be able to put the mileage back on again.

I tell ya what nice. When you run your dog to the point that he's worked and sleeps the rest of the day but you go on about your normal business. I haven't done that in a while but from what I remember it was pretty good.
Brandine: Now Cletus, if I catch you with pig lipstick on your collar one more time you ain't gonna be allowed to sleep in the barn no more!
    Cletus: Duly noted.

I just add 8 cent sheet metal screws to the bottom of my retired summer shoes. They are bomber. Click image for larger version.

We spent an Christmas and New Years down there a few years ago and I wish we could do the same every year.

I'd post pics but I can't because this site doesn't want to work, Im about to quit like everyone else, fack.

I scored a Devils Garden permit on New years Eve and took one of my young daughters, that was very cool.

Back into the swing of things, got into San Juan Solstice - pumped for that.

Any big 2025 race or event plans out there?

I had big running plans for spring, but now I am just hoping to get back to running period this season. Been developing a numbness on pad of my foot + pain on the top of my foot for a while. Nothing that prevented me from resting though. However 3 weeks ago that numbness turned into an extremely sharp pain even when walking. Internet sleuthing made me think I had Morton’s neuroma but 1 MRI later and I am shelved with a bone stress, one level below a stress fracture. Never heard of a bone “stress” before, nor have I ever had a stress fracture. It is both painful and annoying to not be able to run right now. Walking is even painful. Plus I am developing other foot, knee and back pain due to compensating as I walk. PSA to listen to your body…especially when you get older.

I had big plans for this year (I turn 50 this year) building to doing R2R2R in October. Then I go and break my tibial plateau on my first ski day of the year. I'm 7 weeks post surgery and my PT says I'll be able to start jogging mid April and full return to running in late June.

I'm hoping to still check off a few of the big ones I had planned, but not getting my hopes up. My PT told me that I don't need to give up on the R2R2R yet, but I'm not sure I'll get there physically by then. Hoping to get stoke coming back to this thread soon.

Congrats on SJS dude! My buddy got in too, he’s stoked and nervous!

Dang teleswede and phatty! Heal up soon. Injuries are never fun.

I just scrapped my race plans for the year due to some things popping up on the calendar. Debating what to sign up for now, if anything.

    Running, Anyone...?

No big plans for me running this year but after a stressful first half of last year at work, I committed in July that I would start running again, every day. Today is day two forty one. Never thought I would make it this long but I feel great and love that it’s as much a routine as coffee in the morning.
