Trying to keep up with getting out every other day. 5.7mi loop with 2700ft. Feeling good but slower today than previous 2 runs. Legs are feeling it, but getting stronger.

I’m in Northern CO, phatty.
Way to get out! That’s nice vert in those miles!
Bigdude- I’m curious to hear what you find and how things work out for you. Good luck!
Some great pics and efforts [emoji3595]!
Thanks stapes, took the day completely off yesterday and got a massage. Going to give it one more day and try things out again tomorrow, massage lady thought it could have been super delayed DOMS (redundant) with the 4 b2b big days on the bike. It was 24k in climbing but felt great during and after. I don’t know, just hope it goes away.
50 miler in 11 weeks, want to get going again. She gave me a ration of shit about not properly warming up or stretching after (never have). Maybe I’ll start that too.
Still not convinced it’s hydration but pushing all the goods there as well.
It really is. I count my lucky stars that I have it 15 minutes away. Plus all the awesome stuff within 30 minutes.
I'm not a huge logging guy, but the clear cutting from Tiger 3 to Tiger 2 has really opened it up and made it so much more enjoyable. Now that the wildflowers have taken over it is pretty spectacular.
Didn’t even recognize that as tiger with that logging. I remember only seeing rainier from the very top. killer mtb trails

I've been dealing with cramping issues for almost 15 years. Mine started after a mountain bike fall that did some damage to the left of my right knee joint. Many doctors, physios, got it scoped in 2013, all with the same result. More activity = cramping, usually starting in my right quad.
I've rehabbed it to the point where I can now bike as far as I want and I can run pretty good as well (ran 20 miles on Sunday) BUT I have to be careful running on the downhills and stretch if things get tight. I still deal with cramping at least once a week, but I can stretch/walk it out most of the time now.
I don't have any real advice besides start slow and build up. Biking *usually* helps solve my cramping now (it made it worse originally), so biking before a run helps keep things loose and if my leg cramps up, spinning it out on the bike will normally help.
Mine is not directly related to hydration/electrolytes, but staying on top of that does help.
So if I was in your position I would:
- start with flat runs that you are pretty sure you can finish (sounds like the cramping didn't start until 5 miles in, so start with 4 or something)
- gradually build up your runs
- hope the cramping goes away with better conditioning, but if it doesn't, try to pay attention to what exactly is causing your cramping (for me, sprinting and running fast downhill will almost always cause cramps, even at the start of a run)
- as soon as you feel a cramp, stop, walk, try to stretch the opposite muscle of what is cramping. Simple yoga (cat/cow, childs pose, down dog, cobra, etc.) might help as well.
Once a full on cramp starts, it's really hard to get rid of, so the key is noticing the very start and trying to loosen it up before it's locked in.
I've been dealing with this for way too long![]()
One more for the week. 6.5mi and 3800ft. This trail is usually one of my go tos for steep and hard. Usually there's hardly anyone on it. This time I saw 5 groups coming up as I was heading down. Never seen more than 1 before. I guess the word is getting out. Generally the legs are feeling pretty good this week.![]()
Ah, no wonder I didn’t recognize it hah
Nice work. How much of the up are you running vs power walking? As someone who is just getting their feet wet into trail running, running up that much elevation would be very inefficient/impossible for me. Seems like I can power walk with half the effort at the same speed when it gets steep
Also here’s a pic of my run here in SD

Is this Something in the Dirty Harry/Putrid Pete zone? I've been meaning to do a Putrid Pete->Defiance Loop. I ran the Granite Creek Connector->Granite Creek trails to Thompson Lake and back about a month ago. That whole area between I-90 and the Middle Fork road is a gold mine of options. A buddy and I are going to try running Section J in a day a week from this Saturday so tapering now. Hopefully my recovery is quick and I can get out and do more in that area in August.
Sweet Pic. I can't speak for phatty but I know I use the term "run" pretty loosely. Lots of walking on the uphill sections unless I'm doing some sort of specific training like hill intervals for ski season training. I joke that the two best things about trail running are walking and eating junk food.
Did a couple trail runs in Ireland, such a beautiful place! One thing that surprised me was there was no one else running these trails, but there was a lot of people hiking them. Makes me think the FKT circus and Strava-ing is not popular world wide, which is a great thing. The Wasatch is completely different.

Gorgeous pic! Love San Diego.
I mostly power hike the ups. Most trails I do are too steep for me to run, plus my VO2 Max has been shot since I had my heart attack last year. Still working on that. For the first time I got absolutely dusted by someone running up the trail from behind me on Old Mt. Si. I just stared in awe. Not sure he was human
Nailed it. This was Putrid Pete. I try to do the Defiance loop (I go down the Old Mason Lake trail to avoid crowds). Thinking of doing it tomorrow. You can also head to Web (going west on the ridge) and drop back down to Dirty Harry and traverse back to P3 at the Balcony. Only done that once but the route finding is pretty easy.
I've done Thompson Lake and the drop down to the lake is steep. Want to do it and add Thompson Peak as well.
Jealous on Section J. Hoping to do it soon. My dream run is Wonderland in 3 days, but need to work up to it. Will be trying to get to the Buck Creek Loop out in Glacier Peak wilderness in late August.
Yeah, don't run uphill. You lose all of the mechanical efficiency inherent to running. Your perception that you were going just as fast for half the effort was exactly right. Sure, a few freaks can do it, but if you go to just about any ultra even the top people are mostly walking* uphill.
* - walking stupid fast, though.
Doesn't seem to be too big of a problem for Killian

Brandine: Now Cletus, if I catch you with pig lipstick on your collar one more time you ain't gonna be allowed to sleep in the barn no more!
Cletus: Duly noted.
Like I said, "a handful of freaks...." Killian is definitely a freak.
Acceptable day out.

I was vaguely talking about how some US Strava users are all about the 'hustle-culture' of bringing the grind of work and daily life to the mountain peaks by making every day a race day. Risking injury and a possible rescue from S+R to improve their spot in an imaginary pecking order - those kinda people. I'm not talking about every single Strava user.
Glad you were able to accept your day, Dan. Looks like a nice big day, your pics are acceptable too.
Last night's rain cleared up nicely for the run down.

Big day out yesterday and was finally able to get up high. 15mi and 4500ft. Running around 60%, but much was too steep and technical. Lots of fun granite slabs, though. Was pretty wiped, but rest and recovery are what Sundays are for.![]()
