I got out for my first Mailbox Peak of the season. 5.4mi and 4k climb. Felt slow at the time but ended up being pretty consistent with last 5 Strava times. Not too bad for early season, especially since I had to take it slow near the top due to ice.

Nice phatty! That looks great. I want to run in the pnw someday.

Been continuing to get out in search of vertical. Springtime conditions…sun, wind, snow…25 mi trail race this weekend….

    4 x 4 x 48

I finally found the perfect window to do my version of the Goggins classic!

The first 24 hours were easy-ish then after run #7 things quickly became more challenging mostly from lack of sleep.

I did like the added component of using steep climb muscle groups but the added time involved to hit the actual 2 mile turnaround made it prohibitive at the end as I progressively became more delirious !

Sträva told me I burned 7256 calories against the 7227ft vert. Interesting to see those numbers so close, though I don't know to really trust the Strava calorie count. Nutrition in general was pretty easy as I just power ate right after each run and then slept/digested before next lap.

Nice, carp. I can't hang with sleep deprivation like that.

Got the kiddo out today, 6.5 rugged miles and 3k vert. He joined the frosh football team and you can tell that he's been doing 2-a-days for a few weeks. Stronger up and down than he's ever been.

It's a good thing I like running since my shoulder is jacked and riding is out of the question.

I've got one on the football team also and it's great to see how much stronger he is in the hills after working out all year

Let's get this thread going with summer. Took on McClellan Butte. 10.5mi and 3800 vert. This trail has everything. Soft, loamy straight aways, roots, rocks, steep, switchbacks, knife ridge scramble to the peak. Overall an awesome trail. Missed my PR on the downhill by 45 seconds. Planning a loop for Monday that will get more vert over 9mi.

Nice. Got into the alpine yesterday as well with similar stats, 10.4 mi and 3,900 vert. Averaged 7:05 miles on the down.

Odd recovery question I’ll pose here for the hell of it, as Im a bit perplexed:

Been training all spring/summer for a 50 mi in Crested Butte in September. I like to ride as well, last week I did 3.5 day bikepacking trip from Denver to Breck on the CO trail. Pretty decent days (for me) avg. 50mi and 6k climbing daily. Felt great the entire time, no soreness and spend the following 4 days w family doing nothing but relaxing and recovering.

Home today, start up running again. Do an easy 8 miles out the house (800 ft climbing, pretty flat). Didn’t push real hard, at about 5 mile mark my legs started locking up in what I can only describe as a cramping/muscle fatigue situation (mostly quads). Basically limped home.

I figured 4 days of rest was plenty especially considering it was riding not running. I know there are litany of possible factors here but it was discouraging to say the least as I feel like I’ve put the time in.

Was that too little recovery from the bike or something else?

Dehydrated? Electrolytes? Take a few salt tablets?

I’ve had similar muscle cramping as you described but they’ve always come during longer runs when I’ve pushed too much/too soon, or it’s been super hot and I’m sweating a ton. Starting using a saltier electrolyte mix and /or using salt tablets and it seems to have helped (knock on wood).

The heat isn’t all bad. Empty trails, icy cold swimming holes feel great, and wild berries are popping. Black raspberries didn’t like the drought but wineberries are going crazy and wild blackberries will be the same in a week or two. Gotta love trail snacks.

Considered that but it’s hitting different than cramps, tried an easy run today and devolved into a walk after about a mile. Feel like I’ve been good about hydration and electrolytes daily. Going to try a massage and a day or two off and see if that gets me somewhere

dude, are the legs in general feeling limber? Can you stretch the quads okay? How are you feeling overall?

Feeling great overall, shocked at how not sore I was (other than ass) after the ride days. Beginning of the run feels great and then the problem is sudden. Seems to get triggered by declines.

This is why it’s perplexing as I generally feel really great. Quick quad stretch on trail got me back to running slowly again, but it reappeared after another mile or so. Going to do some proper stretching and rolling today, see if that moves the needle

I've got 5 years on you and the cramping just gets worse. Something with aging and not handling activity as well. When I was in my mid 40s, I started drinking 80-100 oz of water each day which seemed to help me a lot.

Got out before the heat hit too bad yesterday. 6mi and 3500ft. Times are getting better as the summer moves on. Trying Nike Zegama shoes lately after not loving the changes Saucony made to the Xodus. Really liking them so far.

Not much high alpine yet, but hopefully this weekend.
