I think it would be more effective if the butt end was shoved up the user's ass.

Years back (early 90's) I rode up the lift with this couple after watching them unclip and stow the rods back in their poles before getting on the lift. Supposedly it eases pressure on your knees by 30% or so, and every single person I've seen use them (all older folks w/creaky knees - AKA all of us in 30 years) loved them.

Admittedly I haven't seen any in nearly a decade.

Yeah they look pretty wacky and I'm not quite sure how you sit on a chairlift with them on but I've talked to a couple of old bastards who said that there was no way they could ski without them because of their messed-up knees.

So if they allow people to get out on the hill when they couldn't do so otherwise I guess I'm in favor of them.

edited: Ah, they unclip them for the chair, I didn't know that.

I see a lot of old timers using them at Vail. I'll probably be using them too when I'm 75.

I saw these for the first time in the lift line last week at vail. I was having a hell of a time figuring out what wires clipped to their ass did for their skiing.

A woman I know at K used to use those. She recently had double knee replacements. I think she's still using them on doctors orders. But she swore by them before the knee replacement.

I'm sure they look completely gay unless you need them. Then they start looking pretty sweet...

When I was in Vail a couple months ago I saw an ad for these on TV during "Good Morning Vail." Like others have said, anything that gets people out on the mountain who otherwise wouldn't be able to is great.

Ok, I'm not that old, but have destroyed both knees. But I'm wondering, wouldn't this just keep you from strengthening tthe leg muscles that protect and control the knees? Seems to me strict rehab and some protection to keep you from hyperextending or over flexing the knee (ie, Asterisk knee braces) would be a better solution.

That's because you're not that old. I think destroying your knees at 30 vs destroying your knees at 65 makes a big difference in how much you can expect to recover.

It's funny. One second you're taking the piss out of something and the next second you're learning. Lifes a crazy beast.

I know it's not what he was referring to, but it's what I thought of when I saw people skiing with poles on their ass.
