Jay Peak Glade & Chute Bash: Anyone competing?

No, I'm not competing. I want to leave that up to the aggressive stompers.

I was just wondering whether anyone on the East Coast is going to take advantage of a local big mountain event. It's this Saturday, 3/17. The snow covreage is excellent and snow is in the forecast Thursday on through Sunday.

Snowsprite and I will be at the mountain that day, we can cheer you on!

I thought about it and then read that the qualifier is going to be on Upper River Kawi. Shortly after that I remembered that I don't really like skiing bumps.

Definitely let me know if you're going to be there. My husband plans to be taking photos, so he'll be able to keep an eye out for you.

The Face can be very windswept at the top. You have to work your way through a lot of rocks/boulders at the top, and around some shrub pines. Depending upon your route, you may have to huck a small cliff or two (or some larger cliffs, if you're so inclined) into the main chute. Once you get into the main chute, it opens up and the chute can have boat-loads of snow. Lots of lines to choose through pine trees. If I recall, the last time they held this comp, many chose to enter off the ridge, which would be skier's right of the tram house.

The snow in there right now is very good. In fact, on Saturday we saw some gapers in there, they were struggling but they got through the top sections OK. Forecast is calling for snow from Thursday through Sunday, so snow will hopefully be refreshed for the competition.

Qualifiers are on Upper Quai. This trail is a favorite. It has a rocky entrance that offers some nice small hucks. There is also a line that doesn't require hucks but is pretty moguled up and tight. Upper Quai sees far more traffic than The Face, and is generally moguled below the rocks. Moguls are usually nice ones, since those learning to ski moguls are intimidated by the entrance to the trail and just don't go there.

Huh.....maybe. Didn't ski last weekend and haven't done anything athletic since then except for having sex with my stripper ex-girlfriend (and that wasn't particularly athletic).

If I can ski on Friday and feel good, I'll be there.

Oh, and just because there's bumps, doesn't mean you have to ski them....don't be a sally, B.

True, but assuming this weekend isn't a complete wash, I would rather ski good snow elsewhere.

From what I have heard, it's one huck on the Face and then straight line the rest. Not your 'typical' comp but fun never-the-less.

you sound like a bitter bear. Ski a technical line on the venue next time and you will score better than the dude who sent one air big. They want to see that you can ski not just take off and land. Also, did you ski exposure at the top? I've done a few comps out west and they won't reward those who do one big drop. ski a double or triple stager next time even if that means traversing at speed to the next feature. That will score you big as long as you ski fast, well, and stomp your airs. What looks good for 3 seconds on camera won't score you big in a freeride comp.

Bitter bear - hardly.

powder11 did just place in the top 10 @ the Canada Freeskiing comp this year. The Jay comp is a joke compared to the 'other' comps.

I agree this doesn't compare to the "other comps" out there. The venue is so much smaller, not enough time or features to really mix it up a lot in one run. I knew someone who competed in it a few years ago and he said it was a lot of fun, and a way for him to see what it would be like to be in a competition of this kind. It's a great way to "get your feet wet," so to speak. But I also suspect that if more competitors had a "history" of freeskiing comps, it would help up the legitimacy of this comp. So if guys like spoon and powder11 enter, the winners are more apt to reflect the true talent of the competitors.

I can tell you that when I watch locals skiing The Face, ridge, etc., when they're just out playing on a powder day, it's great fun to watch some of the lines they choose. They can get pretty creative.

That's a good question. I suppose it's like other comps in that regard, and if visibility sucks, they won't hold it.

For anyone wondering about the cost, it's $50 but that includes your lift ticket. Categories are male, female, skiing, snowboarding and tellying.

i am starting to see it too. i'll be as far north as B'ton saturday nite after i ski MAD...i may take a baby step and ski stowe sunday, so i can get re-acclimated to the 4hr ride home on a sunday nite...then the 5 hour ride won't be such a shock to the system

The guy who won it a couple years ago threw a front flip off the big huck at the beginning, made about ten decent turns after that and took home first place.

blatto- that was the first year.

my brother and i were there that year, with our old vt. crew. the competition is fun, and yeah, technical lines are rewarded well, although there is some bro-brah rewarding going on but nothing really out of the ordinary at local competitions.

fun for EC, it is one of the few competitions on the east that is actually decent and worthwhile IMHO. then again.... what do i know.
