Pistons gave it away on a mental mistake.

Pistons gave it away because for abouth the last 4 min. of regulation, they didn't score a fucking point.

Good stuff so far. I'm not a big NBA fan, but this is an interesting matchup. Maybe I'm biased since I grew up in Michigan, but I figure just about everyone is rooting for the Pistons that isn't from LA or has some tie to LA. Anyone want to weigh in on that?

I despise LA. Not the Lakers, necessarily, just LA.
But unless Kobe is caught yet again in an Eagle County hotel, and Shaq chokes to death on a Caramel Crunch Bar, there's no way LA's going to lose to Detroit.

It *may* go 7, at which point LA will burn in celebration.

*As an aside ~ I only caught bits & pieces of the Larry Bird comments...Did anyone find them "offensive", or did he just say what everyone's thinking anyways?*

I don't know how you can say that after watching the first two games.

Larry's comments about white superstars weren't really offensive. Everybody recognizes the fact that a large segment of the population that used to be NBA fans (and put up with "good" black players like Magic and Jordan) are turned off by the whole Allen Iverson, hip-hop, gangstah image of today's NBA. I say that these people were never really basketball fans to begin with, but then again neither are 2/3 of the people at Staples Center - it's how the NBA makes money. Charles Barkley has made this point more than once on Inside the NBA and nobody flinched. So on that point Larry was right on (and he answered the question asked) -- race does matter: you think Eminem would be so big if he was black?

The more interesting comment was that he was "disrespected" when a white guy tried to guard him. I think part of what he was saying was that there were no white defenders in the league which is true (Bobby Jones, excepted). But the other, more interesting way to look at all this is that since Bird grew up so poor and with a broken family life, he almost feels like he can relate more to the black guys in the league (right or wrong about their backgrounds) and that he felt like his game (the brashness and trash talking) was "black." That and the fact that he says blacks are just naturally the best athletes are the comments that I think are wrong and damaging.

There are probably more good white players in the league now than in Bird's prime. The thing is most of them are European and I think as a result people don't think of them the same as the white US players.

I'm a Red Sox fan. I know all about this shit.

edit: From the article I just read on ESPN, his comments don't appear to be very "newsworthy". Has there been another white player SINCE Larry Bird that comes even CLOSE to his level? No chance.

I used to be a HUGE fan of the game years ago. It's a different game now. Not because it's dominated by black players, but there just aren't many pure "shooters" out there. Now, you've got entire teams going through a playoff series that can't shoot over 40%. Being from Boston and watching that dynasty slowly fall apart over the years as the face of the game changed - is really why I'm not a bigger fan NOW. I have a hard time getting excited over a few 7' guys either slamming it home, or arcing one in from 10'. The "finesse" of the game is gone...

Who gives a shit what Larry Bird said? His actions spoke louder during his years in Boston w/ Parrish et. al than his words do now.

come on! where else can you look up at the sky at 2:00 am and think the sun is about to rise? Don't you appreciate that? Plus who needs to see little twinkling hot burning balls of gas millions of miles away, when you've got plenty of big stars right next door in Hollywood and on the Lakers that are much more entertaining?

Anyway what time is the game on?

    Who knows, man?

They tell us 8:30 ET, and tip-off was actually around 9:45 ET.

But that was while it was in L.A.

the pistons HANDLED the lakers both games...they beat themselves. unless the pistons just lose all their focus i can't see them losing the series.

remember...nobody even expected them to win one in LA...let alone almost win both.

Yes, the Pistons made the Lakers look human tonight. Just remember the last series where they came back from a 2-0 deficit. It's not over til the fat lady sings.

I don't know if it's the Sheed factor or Larry Brown. Well, Sheed has had foul trouble this series. So who knows. Unfukkinbelievable!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What a difference a year makes.

...Mitch Albom is usually a good read after these big games.

The Pistons are money. It's far from over, but this is an exceptional team.

Tayshaun Prince. Making Kobe feel small. Apparently they were high school rivals. Good television.

The only upside to this chanpionship is that Karl Malone still won't have a ring.
