    XXL or Big Daddy

I mostly ski mixed conditions, chopped powder, wind sift and crud. I would like to add a ski to my quiver for the deeper days.

I currently ride Pro Riders 186. Love them to death except for the tendency to scuba dive in deeper pow.

I read Gwat's review of the XXL's and it got me pretty pumped. I think at 194 they may be a bit long for me though.

Haven't heard much about the Big Daddy but I know they are wider and shorter (190). I think both skis have the same purpose.

    I am 5'8" 160lbs
Skied on Legend Pros(186) for 2 seasons and have Sugar Daddy Pimps (183) for touring. Previously skied Seth's 179 (hated them), Fischer Big sticks 84 (191).

    Any thoughts?

While I'm sure the XXL is a great ski, most reviews on here should be taken with a grain of salt...they tend to be overly positive.

The XXL is much more similar to the old 193cm blue big daddy...the new one is pretty different. They are both powder skis, but that's it. I'd say the new BD is more of a super floater, while the XXL should be better at speed for charging stuff...but they should both float and charge well. You could probably handle the BD, it's pretty light for it's size and the mount point is pretty far forward. I'll be on it as an east coast powder/tree ski, I'm 185 lb, 6'1.

Other alternatives? Maybe the head supermojo 103 183cm, the rossi axiom 183 (old), stockli DP's in a 193, and there's probably like 10 other simliar choices that I can't think of right now....

I take it you want something with a waist width of 105-115+? I'd say if this is just a ski for chopped pow, wind sift, crud, deeper days you should at least look at reverse camber stuff.

The EHPs might be a great fit for you, as they aren't quite as much ski (from what it sounds) as the XXLs. Praxis, EHP, ARG, Spats, even Toons might be worth looking at if you've got skis for hardpack/harder variable conditions.

Supermojos's are most definitley NOT a deep pow ski, especially in the 183 size. Never skied the DP's, but it seems too similar to the LP, might not be what you want if you want a pow ski.

Not sure if you are into the reverse camber/sidecut skis, but a Praxis would be a great deep pow ski and at $550 a much cheaper alternative to the XXL or Big Daddy.

I'm talking about the current supermojo 103 with the really, really soft tip/forebody flex....much softer than the older im103 version. Yes, similar to the LP in some ways, but better in pow. Not a super floater or reverse camber ski, but a solid all around pow ski.

The Stockli DP is very much a pow ski, the shovel is thin, light and soft, and the sidecut has alot of taper...much different than the LP, and quite like the XXL, but narrower....and easier to handle. He should be able to ski the 193 stockli if he normally skis the 186 LP, and it might work like a slightly scaled down XXL for him.

I was just throwing ideas out on stuff that would be simlar to the LP's but more powder oriented, or similar to the XXL but easier to handle....he might decide on something different entirely, such as the '07 Big Daddy, reverse camber, etc.

You are talking about the mojo 105, not the 103. They still make the 103 which is the same at the old Monsters and Supermojos.

edit: and they come in a 181 and 191... FWIW

No, I'm talking about the supermojo 103.....what are you talking about? The tip and into the forebody of the 103 has been softened considerably relative to the overall flex, since when they first came out. The middle and tail are also probably slightly softer.

    you are wrong... sorry

    http://tetongravity.com/forums/showt...head+supermojo

edit: this year they made a Super Mojo 105 and a Team Mojo 103. The 105 is their softer, twin tipped powder ski and the 103 stayed the same as the older Monster/Supermojo. At least that's what I've been reading/hearing from everywhere else. If you can find something to backup your claim then I'll listen, but until then I think you are wrong.

Maybe pechelman will chime in here, he's skiing on this seasons 103's and seems to dig them.

i put a full day on some xxl's with tyrolia demos yesterday... damn! they be a lot of ski!

first impressions: well, i thought they looked kind of short and chubby on my feet. then they ate a couple of small children on the way down the first run. guess these things are core after all...

    1) fucking heavy. yeah, they weigh a ton. more than the old 193 m103 (at least with demo plates). duckwalking up to backside was not pleasant.
    2) fucking stiff. without skiing them side by side, these fealt significantly stiffer than my first year bro stiffs.
    3) fucking fast. these skis ate up everything. they thrive in pow and cut up snow. and windbuff. ooooh, that windbuff. it was actually relaxing to ski these in creamy windbuff, they just kind of went down, and i just kind of went with them. fast.

xxls require a lot of input. i'm 5'10" 175 or so, pretty aggressive, and really had to work to stay on top of these. but when i was right with them, giving them the input they require (and deserve), they certainly delivered, in pow, cut up pow, windbuff, pow-ice bump-pow-ice bump-pow, even in somewhat tight trees.

as for hard snow/carving, don't bother unless you have lots of room. i once said the bro stiffs (188) needed to be going mach insanity to really lay down full carves. well, these need an extra 10 mph, at least at my weight.

sorry i have no comparison to any big daddy, as i've never skied them. can't decide if i'd be willing to ski xxls every day in the resort. my legs would be fucking huge after a season of that.....

Dude.....im103 came out in what....'02ish? It's basicly the same as the current supermojo 103, but the tip on the current ski has a much softer flex than the older im103.

They've changed the flex. The current supermojo 103 has a powder friendly flex, in my personal opinon.

I'm not talking about the 105 at all, it's an entirely different ski.

Well that's your word against everything else I've heard. I think I'll stick with the majority (including reps and people who've skied it) that say it's the same flex. But you believe what you want...

Ya I know that the 105 is a different ski. It's softer which is why I thought you were talking about the 105 not the 103. 103 is the same as it's always been, 105 is a different ski and much softer.

Oh man.....do a search on here, and go flex the skis. Pretty much everyone who skis them says the supermojo 103 is softer than the im103............because it is. I've flexed the im103, and the 05/06 and 06/07 supermojo 103's. The SM is softer in the tip, by far. This years seemed a bit softer than last.....they also got rid of the thick ribbed topsheet, which may have lightened the feel a hair. I have not skied either.

whatever, this argument is stupid. I ski a 103, it's stiff and not a good pow ski. I'd definitley steer somebody away from the 103 even if it's softer if they are looking for strictly a powder ski.

Sorry for cunting up your thread Dude, definitley look into the praxis (search on the forum, there are a few threads about them) if you are interested in reverse camber skis. They are a very affordable option for a strictly pow oriented ski.

Im skiing the xxl as an everyday all mountain ski. I dont even think about taking my 194 LP's out anymore. the xxl is not just a deep powder board. it rips the groomers like a mofo. all you have to do is stay on top of them and go for a really nice ride.

    Thanks guys.

Just came from the shop and flexed a few boards. The Big Daddy seems to be about the same stiffness as the XXL only a bit shorter. I do see now that the BD is more of a pintail ski and that the XXL would probably be a bit more versitile if I was to find myself skiing it in less than perfect powder. The question is.....am I gonna get my ass handed to me if I buy 'em? I am a pretty strong skier but I'm just not sure if I have the mass to ski these things. Side by side they make the Pros look like toys!

one question to answer. do you let your skis run? if you like fall line speed and can hang on, the xxl's will not disappoint.
