First Ski Area to open on the EC is in NC?!

CATALOOCHEE SKI AREA TO OPEN THIS WEEKEND

    FIRST IN THE EASTERN REGION

Maggie Valley, NC – This year’s bragging rights for the first ski resort in the east to open for the season goes to Cataloochee Ski Area, located in the Great Smoky Mountains of Western North Carolina. The southeast resort will be providing the first skiing and riding of the 2006/2007 season for winter snowsports enthusiasts beginning this Saturday, November 4, when the slope ropes drop at 8:30 am This will be Cataloochee’s earliest opening ever in its 46-year history, 15 days ahead of the 2005/2006 season opening.

The oldest winter area in North Carolina continues to make significant improvements to its snowmaking capabilities allowing the resort’s operational staff to be aggressive in helping skiers and snowboarders with their first tracks of the season. “Our automatic snowmaking system enables us to make snow more effectively with the early season temperatures, allowing us to open earlier and earlier each year that the weather cooperates”, says Chris Bates, Cataloochee’s General Manager. “We expect the temperatures to drop into the teens Thursday and Friday nights and we are expecting our snowmakers to convert over one-million gallons of water into snow, just in time for this weekend.” Two slopes are expected to be available for skiers and snowboarders for the first day of the season, on a 6 – 14 inch base. Weekday rates will be in effect.

Cataloochee plans to be open for the season’s first eastern tracks Saturday and Sunday. Additional snowmaking will occur whenever temperatures permit. Nightly cold temperatures in the 20’s are in the forecast next week, allowing snowmakers to continue slope coverage.

For an up-to-date snow report and more information about the 2006/2007 season go to www.cataloochee.com

Wow. It must be sooooo cool to be from out west so you get to shit all over eastern mountains Considering 5400 feet is probably 1000+ feet higher than any mountain in the northeast it is a pretty big difference in altitude.

Well I don't give a fuck. It is snow and I will be there. Maybe Ashleyskis will come down form Beech Mountain (I can't believe they are not blowing) and piss her pants. Goddammit I will at least get to make some turns this weekend. Sure do wish the new Bros were here but they will be worth the wait.

I am JEALOUS!!! NC has an area opening and here in the inland PAC NW we JUST for our first official snow fall today in Spokompton!!! what is up with that??? If i were out east, i would be all over the NC opening. Lines are lines, especially this early in the season. I wish we would have sustained colder temps for this rain that keeps falling so it would turn white....

364 days a year, its either that or mud down here. We'll slide on ice, crud, stumps, roots, grass, whatever. Throw in a few beers and we have just as much fun.

We even manage a few backcountry days after the big dump of the season:

    Loosen up.

I rode Cataloochee while I was living in GA and had a decent time bombing the mountain. I'm glad they showed their guns off and opened first... ENJOY IT.

    I'll know in an hour.

This may be one of the stupidest things posted here in a long while.

Pull out a topo map of the east coast, and you will see who has the highest elevation on the east coast.

Anyone who claims to love the mountains would know about Mt Mitchell.
BTW- 5400 feet is level with Denver.

Why though? Skiing is more popular than ever isn't it? Every time I have gone skiing in the early season, especially on the weekends, the trails are jammed with people and they have 20 minute waits at the lift. Is it the rising cost of making snow that doesn't justify October openings on the EC anymore?

For a thread that's about people getting some snow stoke early that normally don't at this time of year, there is a lot of negativity, cunting and general dumb immature posts on this thread.

It's friday, people are stoked, and if you don't have anything positive to say to them, STFU.

    Happy Friday, bitches,

Well, actually, I am on ski patrol at one of the NC mountains. And yes we usually have several cases of altitude sickness each year. Beech Mtn. is at 5,500 feet and when you get the Florida, South Carolina, Alabama, Georgia crowd from near sea level, combined with poor hydration and alcohol, happens regularly.
