Unhappy We have to put Sam to sleep

We have to put our dog Sam to sleep. We rescued him last summer and we've become very attached to him. But he is showing serious signs of cancer. So we are taking him to the vet. Atleast we could give him a loving home for the time we've had him. This really fucking sucks. Naps on the couch will never be the same

Sorry to hear about your loss. Sam had a good life after you rescued him. Give it some time and then a new pet will come into your life. We had to put down 1 of the Arab's last fall. We walk her for a whole night.(Caulick sp?) Had her for 22 years. She gave us a lot of pleasure and was a gentle horse. After the Vet put her down and left I stood there for a moment and then wonder what I was going to do with 1200 pounds of dead horse.

damn sorry about that tj, he was a nice dog. But take comfort in the fact that you saved him, and made his final months that much better.

Bummer TJ. Losing a pal is always hard.

As a result of the quoted sentence, I now have to clean beer off my keyboard, screen and desk.

I feel ya TJ....been there done that man. Just know you've done your best and you're doing the right thing, regardless of how brutally painful it can be.

I know. He knows it to. I can see it in his eyes. He's pretty weak, and can't get any closer to the fireplace to stay warmer. The cats rub up against him for support. He's such a cool guy. Damn I hate this.

    TJ-
Sorry to hear about your dog man. But it is best for all concerned to buck up and have them put down when it is time. Sorry

here's a few doggy things I've saved over the years (and yes I put this up for every one of these threads and no I don't ever get tired of reading them)

    Dog's PLEA

Treat me kindly, my beloved friend , for no heart in all the world is more grateful for kindness than the loving heart of me . Do not break my spirit with a stick, for though I should lick your hand between blows , your patience and understanding will more quickly teach me the things you would have me learn . Speak to me often, for your voice is the world's sweetest music, as you must know by the fierce wagging of my tail when your footsteps fall on my waiting ear.

Please take me inside when it is cold and wet, for I am a domesticaed animal no longer accustomed to the bitter elements. I ask no greater glory than the privelege of sitting at your feet beside the hearth . Keep my pan filled with fresh water , for I can not tell you when I suffer thirst .Feed me clean food that I may stay well, to romp and play and do your bidding , to walk by your side , and stand ready , willing and able to protect you with my life , should your life be in danger .

And , my friend , when I am very old , and I no longer enjoy good health , hearing and sight , do not make heroic efforts to keep me going ....please see that my trusing life is taken gently . I shall leave this earth knowing with the last breath I draw that my fate was always safest in your loving hands .

    The Rainbow Bridge

There is a bridge connecting heaven and earth. It is called the Rainbow Bridge because of its many colors. Just this side of the Rainbow Bridge is a land of meadows, hills and valleys with lush green grass.

When a beloved pet dies, the pet goes to this place. There is always food and water and warm spring weather. The old and frail animals are young again. Those who are maimed are made whole again. They play all day long with each other.

There is only one thing missing. They are not with their special person who loved them on earth. So each day they run and play until the day comes when one suddenly stops playing and looks up! The nose twitches! The ears are up! The eyes are staring! And this one suddenly runs from the group!

You have been seen and when you and your special friend meet, you take him or her in your arms and embrace. Your face is kissed again and again and again and you look once more into the eyes of your trusting pet.

Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together, never again to be separated.

“I Stood Beside Your Bed Last Night”

I stood beside your bed last night, I came to have a peep.

I could see that you where crying, you found it hard to sleep

I whined to you softly as you brushed away a tear,

    “It’s me, I haven’t left you, I’m well. I’m fine, I’m here.”

I was close to you at breakfast, I watched you pour your tea,

You were thinking of the many times, your hands reached down to me.

I was with you at the shops today. Your arms were getting sore.

I longed to take your parcels, I wish I could do more.

I was with you at my grave today. You tend it with such care.

I want to reassure you, that I’m not lying there.

I walked with you towards the house, as you fumbled for your key.

I gently put my paw on you, I smiled and said, “It’s me.”

You looked so very tired, and sank into a chair.

I tried so hard to let you know, that I was standing there.

It’s possible for me, to be so near you everyday.

To say to you with certainty, “I never went away.”

You sat there very quietly, then smiled, I think you knew.

In the stillness of that evening, I was close to you.

The day is over, I smile and watch you yawning.

And say “goodnight, God bless, “I’ll see you in the morning.”

And when the time is right for you to cross the brief divide,

I’ll rush across to greet you and we’ll stand, side by side.

I have so many things to show you, there is so much for you to see.

Be patient, live your journey out, then come home to be with me."

    Doggy Heaven:
When dogs go to Heaven, they don't need wings because God knows that dogs love running best. He gives them fields. Fields and fields and fields.

When a dog first arrives in Heaven, he just runs. Dog Heaven has clear, wide lakes filled with geese who honk and flap and tease. The dogs love this. They run beside the water and bark and bark and God watches them from behind a tree and smiles.

And, oh, the dog biscuits. Biscuits and biscuits are as far as the eye can see. God has a sense of humor, so he makes his biscuits in funny shapes for his dogs. Every angel who passes by has a biscuit for a dog. Every dog becomes a good dog in Dog Heaven.

God turns clouds inside out to make fluffy beds for the dogs in Dog Heaven, and when they are tired from running and barking and eating ham sandwiches and biscuits, the dogs each find a cloud bed for sleeping.

Dogs in Dog Heaven have almost always belonged to somebody on Earth and of course, the dogs remember this. Heaven is full of memories. So sometimes an angel will walk a dog back to Earth for a little visit and quietly, invisibly, the dog will sniff about his old backyard, will investigate the cat next door, will follow the child to school, will sit on the front porch and wait for the mail. When he is satisfied that all is well, the dog will return to Heaven with the angel.

The dogs in Dog Heaven who had no real homes on Earth are given one in Heaven. The homes have yards and porches and there are couches to lie on and tables to sit under while the angels eat their dinners. There are special bowls with the dogs' names on them. And each dog is petted and reminded how good he is, all day long.

Dogs in Dog Heaven may stay as long as they like and this can mean forever. They will be there when old friends show up.
They will be there at the door. Angel Dogs.

A man and his dog were walking along a road. He was just enjoying the scenery, when it suddenly occurred to him that he was dead. He remembered dying and that his dog had been dead for years. He wondered where the road was leading him.

After a while, they came to a high white stone wall along the side of the road. It looked like it was made of fine marble. At the top of the hill it was broken by a tall arch that glowed in the sunlight. When he reached the arch he saw a magnificant gate that looked like mother of pearl and the streets were paved of pure gold. He and the dog walked toward the gate and as he got closer he saw a man sitting at a desk. When he got close enough he called out, "Excuse me, where are we?" "This is heaven, sir," the man answered.

"Wow! Would you happen to have some water?" the man asked.
"of course sir. Come right in and I'll have some ice water brought right up. " The man behind the desk gestured and the gate began to open up.
"Can my dog come too?" the traveler asked.
"I'm sorry. but we don't accept pets." the man answered.

The man thought a moment and then turned back toward the road and continued on the way he had been going. After a long walk and at the top of another long hill, the man came to a dirt road which led through a farm gate that looked as if it had never been closed. There was no fence. As he approached the gate he saw a man inside leaning against a tree and reading a book. "Excuse me," the man called to the reader. "Do you have any water?"
"Yes, there is a pump right over there. Come on in." answered the reader.
"How about my friend?" the traveler gestured to the dog.
"There should be a bowl by the pump," the man said.

The traveler andhis dog entered the gate and, sure enough, there was an old fashioned hand pump with a bowl beside it. The traveler filled the bowl and took a long drink himself . When they were full, he turned back to the man reading his book and asked, "What do you call this place?" "This is heaven," was the answer.

"Well that is confusing," he said. "The man down the road said that place was heaven too." "Oh, you mean the place with the streets of gold and the pearly gates? That is hell." "Doesn't it make you mad that they use your name like that?" asked the traveler. "No. I can see that you might think so, but we're just happy that they screen out the people who would leave their dogs behind...............
"It is not the result that counts! It is not the result but the spirit! Not what - but how. Not what has been attained - but at what price.

Sorry to hear that!!! We had to put our pup down a couple weeks ago w/ parvo. We only had her a week but she was already part of the family. Had a great disposition. The wife and I took it pretty hard. It sucks to put pets down. Rest assured that you are doing the right thing for him. Don't let him suffer anymore.

Im truely sorry to hear that. I also feel your pain, at least a few years ago. Our dog Sam (very strange coincedence), Samantha, that I rescued from the pound during a summer home from college. She was so shy and hated people, but her face was too cute. I got her home and within hours, she was at home. I went back to school and my parents ended up with Sammy. I get a call one day that Sammy is very sick and has cancer. Within a week, it had spread through her whole body. Could not keep food or water down, throwing up whatever was in her stomach and I told them to please put her down, she was miserable. As a dog lover and owner, that was maybe the single hardest decision I ever had to make, and I was an 8 hour drive away.

Needless to say, I cried all damn day and even writing this post brings tears. She was MY first dog, and it hurts to this day. I miss Sammy.

Thoughts go out to you and your family, TJ.
