Review: Parallels for Macs - Run Windows on your Intel Mac

Just thought i would write a quick thumbs up review for a new Mac product......Now that Intel chips are in macs, you can run Windows XP right along side Mac OS X....

This Parallels program lets you switch from OS to Windows without restarting - takes like a second....i'm very impressed

My new job would have forced me to buy a PC, but now i can stay with Mac AND be compatable with the business world...
It sounds like i work for Apple or something but i'm just pumped i don't have to buy a new computer to be compatable with my new job which runs Windows programs.....

whats the deal with viruses with parallels? i know you're just as succeptible with boot camp, but since this is kind of a type of emulator, is it the same?

On a positive note, I did save some money on car insurance by staying with GEICO..."

I would assume that any viruses that attack thru the Win32 API in Parallels would end there, especially if Parallels is run as a dedicated, non-root user. I imagine you can gum up your Parallels installation just as bad as any real installation, but the nice thing with emulators is that you can rollback to an image/snapshot of the system. My experience is just with VMWare running Windows in Linux, I haven't actually used Parallels yet.

I am not sure how, but a friend of mine has a slightly older (last year) IBook (non-Intel) and he has may of running XP inside of OSX other than boot camp. i am not too computer savvy but it was an interesting system, though the only reason he has is so he can play half life on his mac.

Nick, that's VirtualPC - I can't imagine half life ran very well in it?!

As to the virus question... The neat bit of parallels is that you can make a copy of a fresh install of Windows. If you then store your files outside of the windows disk image, you can then just revert to a clean copy of Windows if things get fucked up. Mac OS X itself shouldn't be vulnerable at all, as parallels is running a seperate virtual machine.

I'm still struggling with WHY anyone would run Windows when they can run OSX? But then maybe that's just me...
