Unhappy Time for a Real Job?

I am considering leaving the ski industry and heading to the corporate world sort of. I have worked all sorts of jobs the majority with holiday companies. I have worked 3 continents and skied about 90 – 100 days a year. I am getting a little fed up with only just making enough money to survive on and at age 30 living in shared bedrooms in overcrowded apartments is getting a little tiring. I am not thinking about returning to the UK and living in London….hell no way….I do have the opportunity for a 1 year visa to Canada and was thinking of trying to settle in Vancouver. I have a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Electronics and Electrical Engineering and was considering a future in Electric Cars or something similar. But here is the problem, It is snowing outside, tomorrow will be a powder day! And I have enough job offers to make it through the summer without having to leave Chamonix.

It might cost you your "hero status". Good luck with the decision Tom, it's one many of us have faced over the years.

If it were my decision I'd find more $$$ ladden work during the summer and bail to La Grave for a cheap winter skiing and living the good life. That place is insanely affordable.

if it means anything, i once met an engineer who worked solely on contract, he would pick up a contract for 6months, ski for a month or so, then grab another contract when needed. Lived a fairly reasonable life. Possibility?

You should talk to the beaver. He is part owner in a happening Electrical Engineering company in the West Kootenays. A real job, real close to the goods.

While on the topic. Does anyone have any Nelson insider info on Pacfic Insight Electronics. If so I would like to talk and pick your brain.

    Hey, don't do anything rash!

If you'e thinking about Vancouver then keep an eye on the T-Net job board. All the tech companies in Vancouver/Victoria/BC list there. I also know the top technical head hunter around here if your insanity persists.
If you have a problem & think that someone else is going to solve it for you then you have two problems.

Tom - what size Arno pole do you want me to bring for you?
(Though I'm starting to feel now that since you're leaving Cham...)

Tom- I hear ya. I've faced the same dilemma through college. All I wanted to do was ski/surf/travel but on the one hand there's a little voice in my head telling me to play the corporate game and try to work the system enough that I can still do the things I love.

    Trade off...
    Happiness, skiing, but scraping by
    vs.
Work, living a little more comfortably, but less skiing.

I've been on both ends of the spectrum. As a bum I've always longed for that dream job....to be able to live a nice comfortable life yet still ski at least 40-50 days a year. I had all the time in the world but not the money to do all the things I want. Fast forward a couple of years and I'm on the other side of the fence- a corporate manwhore, longing for those bum days. Now I have to contend with 3 weeks a year and weekends to get my fix.

Go with the flow. Follow your heart, not what society tells you to do. The Vancouver option does sound good. The only downside is that anywhere else in the world would seem like a green run compared to your Cham adventures

Thanks but no thanks.....can't speak german, and those things are a joke and part of the reason electric cars get such bad press

$$$ Laden work....I'm from the wales that dosen't exist! or I would have been a ski bum not a seasonal worker these past few winters.

Idris - quick, send me a resume. We've (Emco Engineering) got a meeting with Aquilla (electric utility) tommorow. They want to hire us to do some drafting/design. You'd be based in Trail, 5 minutes from Rossland & Red mountain.
    You are what you eat.
