I had a friend back in the mid 90's who was into "alternative" music but did not like bands if they sounded like another band (ie, she liked original sounding alternative music). She had never heard VU, so I played a lot of it for her. She wasn't very into it because to her it sounded like music that had been done before.

For those Raggae fans H.R. from the Bad Brains put out an excellent, and underrated, raggae album CHARGE (iTunes Link) back in the day.

Here is an underrated: The Legendary Shack Shakers (iTunes Link).

Edit - Nice Shack Shakers Video at You Tube

possibly omitted the Yard Birds, Jim Croce.

another under-rated a little more modern would be Ween, they absolutely blew the doors of the Beachcomber.

    Buster, Steve Miller?

Most over-rated for me, The Eagles and Jimmy Buffett.

I saw the Bad Brains up in Portland. We knocked on their motor home so we could give them some weed (we gave weed to all the bands). Anyway, we light it up and they give us t-shirts and thank us. we leave... Well...the weed was super skunk and the cops driving by smelled it. Portland had already decriminalized but the problem was that HR didn't have any ID and the cops were going to haul him in.. Their manager use tour clippings and a lot of talking to keep them from being arrested but they still got citations..

So instead of "pay to cum" in the 2nd set we got "pay to leave".

HR was an intense dude. The rest of the band was cool.

I'll second Pearl Jam as the most overrated band in existence (I'm not saying they totally suck, but kinda).

Yeah, I know, everybody thinks of 'The Joker'/'Fly Like an Eagle', admittedly not so good. But the guy played with T-Bone Walker and was a student of Les Paul.

Anyway, give 'Sailor' or 'Brave new World' a listen. The guy is an unrecognized groundbreaker.
Most over-rated for me, The Eagles and Jimmy Buffett.

And another big plus for Bad Brains. Saw them a lot in Seattle when they'd play punk to piss off the bros and then play reggae to piss off the punks. They smoked it live.

he's kind of like Pacino since the late 70s. He always seems like he's trying too hard.

Another vastly over-rated----Aerosmith. That band has been a caricature of itself since the early 80s.

I love Bob, but I really feel like "his" best stuff was when he was still working with Peter and Bunny.

btw. those of you who mentioned creed: they aren't overrated, they are crap. Only bands you can actually listen to, but who do not deserve the the credits they get, can be overrated

my list (maybe to be continued):
    overrated:
mars volta (Fuck this "You just don't understand them" crap..... exploring the weirdest soundscapes does not make a good album.)
franz ferdinand. (not only them, but those "we just want to make the girls dance" bands are way to many)
Tool (see mars Volta. their Albums are ok, but they definitely do not deserve the hype).
fallout boy (this neo emo is so meh....)
iggy pop. (yeah woohoo he took shitloads of heroin, but did he leave us with any relevant music ?)

    underated:
waxwing THE band defining a whole genre.(emo that is)
ozma (since weezer made the green album ozma have become the better weezer. if you don't believe me listen to their song "Battle scars")
the pixies (not necessarily underrated, but the never got the fame they deserve for influencing nearly EVERYONE)
nada surf (hey aren't those the guys who made "popular" )
killswitch engage (reducing them to their genre of metalcore does not do those hyms justice)

edit: hah i rejoice at the thought that there are others out there who see pearl jam as what they are
    edit:
    more
underrated: mclusky !!!!! Goddam ! Those guys ARE Rock.
aereogramme: the definition of epic songs

over: nofx, antiflag and the rest of those not very subtle melody punks who want to spread the word that bush is evil.

    to be continued.....
