Fellow computer geeks.....HELP ME! - new system, can't even get to post

So I just did a complete upgrade on my system. I went from:

AMD Sempron 2800 system to a new Pentium D system. I plugged everything in, I'm not getting anything to post, no video, no beeps, no nothing. I've unplugged everything but the primary hd, video card, cpu and I still get nothing.

    Here is the system:

    Asus P5WD2-E Premium
    Intel Pentium D 805
OCZ 1GB Kit DDR2-800 PC2-6400 Gold Edition Enhanced Latency Dual Channel RAM
Asus EN7300GS/HTD GeForce 7300 GS PCI Express 256MB DDR2 Video Card
    Cooler Master Extreme Power 600W
    Zalman CNPS9500 LED CPU Cooler
    A bunch of drives

So, everything should be compatable right?
I'm wondering bout the power supply, do I need an 8 pin ATX plug, or just the normal 4-pin ATX plug for the Pentium D? I really don't know wht could be causing the problem since i'm not getting any beep codes.

    Any help would be appreciated

I upgraded a while back and had to replace the power supply because the new motherboard required an additional power input connector that my orginal power supply did not have. Apparenlty the newer power supplies have this. Check out the documentation that came with the motherboard.

Everything's spinning. Everything seems to power up like it should, but it doesn't post any video.

My motherboards and power supplies use a 24 pin power connector (2x12 pin configuration). Start at the beginning -- remove everything except the video card and keyboard. (Unplug the drives, data and power, remove the memory, etc.) You should get the initial boot screen and be able to access the setup. Then start plugging stuff back in.

Have to say that i am with bossas again.Goddamit.Dont skimp on your poopers.

But the problems might be with theese,or not.I´ll play the pcsucks game..

    A. The PS is big enough? A 300W is practically obsolete theese days. 500-600W is required to run a decent rig theese days.Especially if you have a burlier graphscard. Edit:Check

B.That GPU should need a additional power connector, as some 7500/7600GS need (i needed to upgrade my PS to have one with extra connectors when i upgraded my graphcard to a 7600GS.),especially if they are a AGP.Edit:Check

    C.The boot disc is okay?

D.You have disconnected external drives when you start the thing the first time?

E.You didnt burn anything when you put the pos together?

F.Can you return the p.o.s and buy a mac?

The floggings will continue until morale improves.

If Snowdog's suggestions of disconnecting everything but video and memory does not help (first step), then you next need to check: motherboard mounted incorrectly (could be grounding out on the case or stand-off), remove it and set it on top of a piece of cardboard or the box it came in just so it is not touching any metal. If that does not change anything then take out both the memory and video card and power on. It should beep at you without those installed. If it does, try the memory only and see if the beep pattern changes. If it does then try another video card next.

If it does not beep at you with no video or memory chips, the the problem is either power supply (in which case you need to test the supply with a power supply tester (if you have one or can borrow one) or use a volt meter- make sure you have the main board plugged in still you need it for the switch and resistance on the switching power supplies and see if the 5 and 12 volts are ok on the drive connectors), other wise it is either the main board or the CPU (or possibly both) if the power supply tests ok. Double check also your connections for the soft power switch too.

well, i just wrote all this shit and then closed the window on accident. sweet.

Anyhoo, board was DOA. HOpefully I'll have a different one soon. Long story short they should have never made the board I got ( Asus P5WD2-E Premium) and it sucks balls, and mine was worse cause it was broken before I got it. So I'm sending it back Monday and ordering a different one. I pretty much knew it was dead but didn't want to believe it cause i wanted to do the upgrade now and not wait for an RMA or something like that.

RShea, thanks for the useful suggestions. I did actually end up doing all of that before I made this post so at that point I was out of ideas...I even tried plugging in an older Celeron D into it to see if it was the BIOS that didn't support the CPU even though it was supposed to.....that's what I was thinking for a while at least after reading about that being a problem in the 955 chipsets with the newer CPU's. But it was just plain fuct!

In the end I'll have a dual core system duct taped to run at 3.8 ghz for around $700 with the old stuff to sell and get some of it back.....so it will be worth all the swearing when the new board shows up.

I don't like the Mac OS. Never have. I grew up on macs. I switched over to PC's when I found out I wouldn't have to spend so much money to get a fairly quick computer. I'd rather upgrade what I have for less than $1k and still have my 1TB Raid array. I'd rather spend the extra money on something else. Like camera equipment, fixing my car, food, anything but Apple's marketing budgets.

    A. The PS is big enough? A 300W is practically obsolete theese days. 500-600W is required to run a decent rig theese days.Especially if you have a burlier graphscard. Edit:Check EFFICIENT $150 600W PSU

B.That GPU should need a additional power connector, as some 7500/7600GS need (i needed to upgrade my PS to have one with extra connectors when i upgraded my graphcard to a 7600GS.),especially if they are a AGP.Edit:Check NOT NEEDED

C.The boot disc is okay? YES, using it right now.

D.You have disconnected external drives when you start the thing the first time? I DON'T USE EXTERNAL DRIVES ON MY DESKTOP, IT'S NOT A MAC

E.You didnt burn anything when you put the pos together? THE DOG TOOK A DUMP IN THE COMPUTER CASE not really

    F.Can you return the p.o.s and buy a mac?[/quote] I DON'T HAVE AN EXTRA $3K TO WASTE

heh, sorry did I mention I don't like using Macs?

    Heh...

Just that I do the math like this= min.1000$/day of lost income x Number of days shipping mobos allaround trying to fix a problem that shouldnt exist in the first place...

Too bad you have to spend all of your time working so you can pay for your Mac. I'll take the PC and work less.

While I use some Asus motherboards, they are usually only on the AMD socket 939 side of the line. For Socket T - Pentium 4 CPU's I usually try and stay with Intel brand only. They may not overclock as well as some others out there, but Intel will do next day cross shipping of a replacement to their better dealers and that is something that is of value. After all even a Mac if it was to break and need parts would probably out for at least a day. Asus offers a 3 year warranty too, not sure what Apple's is out of the box. But there is something to say for building or upgrading the system and the experience instead of just buying something off the shelf.

Best of luck with the new Asus replacement board, hope it is packaged well and treat it with extra care- ground yourself to protect against static before removing it from the static bag, and then mount it up in the case and attach the connections and components.

Yah, I'm either getting a Foxconn (maker of the intel boards) or an abit. Can't decide yet. Either way, I've read nothing but good reviews of both boards I'm looking at, and $100 less to boot. I got busy again so probably won't be for a while till I can fuck with it again. Either way, I'm testing the next thing out of the box, so I'm not taking my whole friggin computer apart again to find out i have another DOA board!
