    Hey Computer Geeks...Overwriting Program

Is there a good freeware utility out there which can be ised to overwrite slack space, deleted files etc? Esp. one which a JONG can use w/o deleting the entirety of the disc? DOD compliant. And will wipe out meta data.

If not freeware, can you recommend a pay version?

i think norton has a disk utility that will wipe free space.
I also think it also has an option where the wiping is integrated into the defragmentation process.

also ive read that some of the other programs like bcwipe for freespace wipe sometimes screw up your fonts and stuff. I also think those might both be freeware.

edit: wipe is such a weird fucking word. I just said that to myself 10 times and its lost all meaning.

Ewido (now purchased and owned by Grisoft of AVG fame) has this as one of the newest features in their latest Beta for spyware/malware software. It will do 1 time, 4 times, and I think 10 times as the highest setting with options of what to write- free space only, etc.

if you want free, just fill up your drive with some other files..

    then delete those.

Also open as many applications as you can.. to take care of the swap file, (which most of the cleaner apps prob do not tuch.)

    run defrag.

Ewido looks like good software. But depending on just how paranoid you are... Software erasure of individual files isn't super secure. It should protect against someone running undelete or R-Linux. Experts, say at the NSA or hired by an ex-employer, wouldn't have too much trouble recovering the data.
