    Squaw Valley questions

So it looks as though I will be going to squaw this weekend heres what I need to know:

Can anyone give me and my buddy a ride from Stanford preferably friday morning?

WHere should we stay? We were thinking camping, is that a viable option?

    Anybody wanna ski with us?

    Thanks
    AKPM

If I were you, I would stay at PlumpJacks. Just waltz in and sasy you are with the Underhills, and to put everything on their tab. I'd give you a ride, but I'm in New Zealand.

If you seriously want to camp, there's a campground between Truckee and Squaw on the Truckee river that should fit your bill, if it's open by now, which it usually was when I lived there.

Welcome to NorCal, AKPM. Best of luck finding a ride. Even though you take shit from everyone on this board, I bet you're pretty cool to ski with. Camping might be a bit difficult--official campgrounds are mostly closed (some may be open) and forest service roads to free camping are mostly closed/blocked as well. The sleep-in-the-car option remains viable. Squaw is pretty anal about sleeping in their parking lot, though. So basically, if you want to camp, you probably need wheels to get you elsewhere. Don't forget, Alpine Meadows is right down the road and definitely worth checking out. Cheaper too.

People offer rides at www.craigslist.com. You can also post that you are looking for a ride there too; it's free.

Not relevant to the topic but I'm curious... Thinking of applying to Stanford in a year or two... how long a drive is Squaw from Standford going the speed limit?

It is definately dry enough for camping.....would be no problem to find some a place.

A decent cheap hotel is The Mother Natures Inn in Tahoe City (5 miles away, and a pretty easy hitch).

I don't think it's ever been done before. In fact, they'd probably pull you over and screen you for illegal substances. I suppose it'd be over 4 hours driving the limit with no traffic in the Bay Area or Sac, and no weather to deal with.

Easily do-able in 3 hours if you miss the traffic.

But f squaw and go to Kirkwood. $199 student season passes! (and a great mountain, too) 3 hours, not even pushing it, and less traffic to boot.

looks like we are gonna take amtrack to truckee. So we need a place to stay in truckee on thursday and friday, once I'm in truckee its real easy to get on the mountain right??

Anyhow couches in truckee thursday and friday would be rewarded with beer money!

PM Alkasqualik, he's got a condo right at the base of Squaw, and he's in town that weekend. I'm sure he'll let you stay with him for beer money. He might even set you up with a free ticket...

What about a free penis in the anus? That would seal the deal I'm sure

I've done stanford to the parking lot of squaw in 2 hours 43 minutes, but that was perfect roads on new years morning around dawn, so no cops anywhere. I might be at squaw this coming weekend, i'll let people know, just look for bro models on the feet of a drunk college kid.

i'll hopefully be up in tahoe at squaw or alpine saturday, but most likley sunday, and can probably give you a ride back down to the bay area on sunday if needed, but still need to figure some shit out. Now the big decision is do i rock the 212 VR10s and a bogner, or go with more modern equipment

It's 230+ miles to Squaw from Stanford. I'm calling BS on that.

i have 2 witnesses, new years day, clear roads, every chp was on mandatory duty the night before, and there was a some rockslide or construction BS right after the squaw exit off of 89, i literally saw 3 cars in between auburn and the exit off the freeway, no big rigs b/c of the road closure, and we left the bay area at around 5:30 AM. keep in mind that i'm in college, and drive stupid quick.

There's this thing called Mapquest. And another called MapBlast, now MSN Maps & Directions. And something else called Google Maps. All three of which will tell you that it's about 230 miles and should take about 4 hours at the limit.

That said, from Redwood City (about 10 min north of Stanford), my best times are typically on the order of 3:15. I do that driving a max of just under 80mph when I can, less when compelled by traffic or common sense (a nearly three-ton Suburban does not take the twisties like a sports car). I have also studiously avoided the Bay Bridge in favor of the San Mateo or Dumbarton since reading a retrospective on the '89 quake a couple of years ago. They interviewed a scientist at the USGS in Menlo Park who lives in Berkeley -- i.e., someone whose most direct commute would be over the Bay Bridge, and who knows the real risk of earthquakes. He said that if he's going into San Francisco proper, he takes the Bay Bridge because there's really no practicable alternative, but if he can possibly avoid it, he does.

Well, that part I can't promise. I don't want to obligate Alka, ya know?

AKPM, Alka gets a bunch of free day tickets from marketing. They pile up because he is gone all year shooting, so he is just trying to get rid of them at the end of the season. If he says he ran out, check the top drawer to the left of the dishwasher, he might have forgotten a few in there.

    Thanks for the lecture dad.

I have looked it up at google maps. They aren't always accurate and I'm curious to what real life experience would say. You know people... not computers?

But thanks for your advice afterwards

    AKPM...

There are shuttles from Truckee to both Squaw and Alpine, though they might be limited in late season. Check here: http://www.placer.ca.gov/works/tart/tart.htm Thumbing is aso an option.

I'm probably, but not for certain, going to be in Truckee on Saturday, skiing at Alpine. If I am, I can give you and your buddy a ride to Squaw. I will not be sticking you in the anus, you'll have to work that out with Alka.

PM me and I'll give you a phone # where you can call me on Friday night or Sat morning.

AKPM. I'll send you a PM. I can probably give you a ride up and can offer cheap ($18/nite) lodging (I assume you are over 21). You'll need your own sleeping bag/pillow/towel, and bring a bathing suit b/c I don't want to see your naked butt in the hot tub. I'll be leaving Friday evening though, so if you needed to be there during the day Friday, look elsewhere. Craigslist and the aforementioned snowpals list are good options. I'll be at Alpine both days and you can ride there with me. I might consider driving you over to Squaw in the morning, but you'd have to do something special (not involving my anus) for that.

As for the driving times issue. I live about 15 minutes north of Stanford. I've made it to Alpine Meadows (5 mins past Squaw) in 3:15. I don't think I stopped for gas. With no traffic, and one gas stop, 3:30 is a good time. 2:45 means you went straight through SF with Zero traffic and probably drove over 80 or 90 most of the way. I wouldn't call BS on it, but it is impressive. On Friday afternoons in winter, 4-6 hours is typical, depending on weather.
