Pretty stoked so far. He's doing all the puppy things but his potty training is like nearly 100% now especially at night. During the day he goes over by the door and sits if he wants out and the only accidents have been if we missed his cue.

Took him on a "hike" yesterday with the other pup. Only about a 1/2 mile and his recall was excellent. He does come charging over to me right away when I yell COME and put my hand down low with a treat in a closed fist palm up. He is getting used to riding in the crate in the back seat of the truck but gets a little scared if my GF or the other dog aren't also back there with him. Good pet barriers for double cab Tundras to keep him in the back seat? Basically turn the entire back seat into a big crate.

Last night for the first time he went into and slept in his crate 100% on his own at bedtime.

My female shepherd was a total spaz in the car in the first half of her life. My solution was to tie a short piece of climbing webbing to the backseat headrest post in my '02 Tundra and clip her in with a biner to her collar. Worked great for her, YMMV.

This lady is going in today to have a cancerous lump removed from her hip.

Charly absolutely hates the vet but she’s been a real trooper with all the appointments she’s had the last few weeks.

The have to keep her for two nights so I’m going to be a nervous wreck the next couple of days.

Eventually, the pup will understand what the crate is for and use it all on his own, it will be his safe space, which collies love.

Mine sleeps with me on my bed, but only for a little bit then he gets up and goes elsewhere. He has 6 or 7 beds in the house. His favorite is the cozy destress-doughnut underneath the dining room table that's next to a wall, lol. That's his 'crate', his safe space. He goes there when there is a thunderstorm as well.

Our Border Collie Shep is almost 2 now and I've been waiting for the time when I can put his crate away but he just keeps going back in there to chill all the time - when he's not perched on the top of the couch by the window like a cat. Can't take his safe space away from him.

Thanks! My wife brought the vet staff a dozen Crumbl cookies, so I think she’s their favorite already.

    Good luck Charly!!

Baby Bug has been found curled up in his crate on his own accord the past two nights. Last night he slept from 1030pm to 445am without needing a pee break! I actually gently woke him at 445 to take him out to pee.

Winnie enjoying the afternoon off. Not sure if you can tell but she’s proud of a successful day squirrel chasing. Still hasn’t come close but she puts in a good effort.

The newest rescue seemed to be going into the opened door crate and napping. Turns out she was secretly devouring the corner of a towel covering the dog bed in the crate. I kept finding little slobbery balls of fabric all over the place. I’m glad I am retired and able to baby sit 24-7, I think I was crazy to have puppies when I had a full time job, but those puppies were better (possibly) or my memory is much worse (very likely).

Charly is back from the surgeon and other than a very angry looking suture line she’s doing great. A couple weeks of R and R and she should be back to normal.

Thanks for the kind words everyone.

    Probably been discussed already:

GPS dog collars? Looks like the SpotOn is the only one that does virtual fence and GPS tracking? Little guy is already starting to roam and follow the older dog (who sticks to our 4 unit townhouse area. Roughly and 1-1.5 acre area.). This little fucker is probably gonna start chasing deer soon etc. In the summer the deer are gone because there is feed up high and the golf course is open. In the Winter we have so may deer. Having GPS tracking in case he bolts on a hike in the mountains is also a big selling point.

Anyway, anyone use one of these?

I have a Dogtra pathfinder2 and it has a geofence feature that we use. I turned the correction off on it and it just beeps both of us when he gets close to the boundary. It’s not super accurate, I’d say that the fence boundary can be +/- 25 feet of what you’ve drawn on the map, so may not be ideal for smaller places where you are trying to keep him out of a road or something.

I do like that I can pull up a map on the smartphone and see right where he is though. And I can beep/correct him from 9 miles away.

This was discussed a few pages back. I have a Garmin hunting dog GPS collar I use.
It was also pointed out that it is mostly illegal to let your dog run free and almost always illegal to let your dog chase wildlife.

Training might be a better approach for a young dog, it will pay off a lot more than a GPS collar.
