I say this because as coasties we tend to forget about facets - its pretty rare here in coastal BC. I'd guess faceting is also not that common in AK.
Having said that, when going up a steep slope I tend to hug rock features too but try to probe them with a ski pole turned upside down or with a gloved hand to see if I can find facets. Doesn't do me any good for deep instabilities. Anyone else chime in with things to do.
Here in Colorado we get real extremes in temperature - with hot sun warming rocks the faceting around rocks and rock bands are particularly notable. Even on years when the stereotypical Colorado depth hoar isnt much present - the rockier areas can produce faceting that can persist well into spring and even summer even with only short cold periods.

Anything steep and rocky should be considered very different and held with greater suspicion than deeper areas.

TH - Yea that blue route would be way hard as we didn't have axes and the rock here is as chossy as it gets. On the way up we mostly stayed on tundra or snow an inche deep, pretty much always ridges are safe here unless theres a cornice, and the cornice wasn't built up at all (3 inches at the most)

Others thin snowpack = higher temp gradient = more faceting but its strange here because of spatial variablity in snow depths we kinda figured the snow would be deep there because it was a couloir (normally snow is deep in couloirs) Which means the face doen't windload much if any so out of the triangle it was weather green terrain red snowpack green to yellow human factor yellow. No avy forecast for the western chugach or most of alaska for that matter
Its not that I suck at spelling, its that I just don't care

All of alaska show characteristics of continental snowpacks, even in Juneau, leaving us with ultra light powder and lots of deep instabilities, especially in the talkeetnas, the brooks range, the western chugach the alaska rainge ect. the rest is marine most of the time but when its clear it show characteristics of a continental snowpack evcen in juneau

before I start my ignore list I would like to say. Duck Jong you are a piece of shit like that self portrait you were putting up. A big difference between AKPM and you is you will always be a piece of shit while AKPM even with 5600 posts here still has the potential to be a descent person. What signs were you looking for when your pathetic ass got avalanched off the snowmachine seat? Now I feel better.

AKPM I think this going to be a tough spring for avalanches. The long cold spells created some persistent weak layers. One thing is remember often the top of the mountain has been warming alot longer than the bottom so pay attention if things are rolling above you. The other thing which is really easy to see with corn snow, is if the snow is collapsing you are to late.

What the fuck is wrong with you? As a person I mean? Do the world a favor and kill yourself. Or at least have yourself castrated. You're total scum, and I'm not saying that in a flame-war kind of way, I mean you are a total psycho.

In the meantime I wish Frozen would listen to what the entire board already said and get this asshole off the island.__________________

Aight mate fair enough, I read that thread. 1) AKPM asked you where the place was 2) you answered sarcastically 3) he called you an ass 4) you start fucking railing off the deep end like a madman, create an alias called LongDuckDong just to stalk him, start posting pictures of him, pictures of turds, pictures of fat chicks, monitor AKPM's every single post and make sure to follow it up with more abuse.

A little touchy there aren't you?

That single thread you mentioned was the only moderately interesting and/or positive thing I've ever seen you submit here, all the rest is rubbish.

Don't they sell shotguns pretty cheap and easy up there in AK? I'm sure you can get a nice one to commit suicide with. Will you, please? Or at least, stop cunting up this fine message board?

    Hey AKPM:

Glad you're OK. Just to let you know, all of the pros out here in the Chugach are on super extra cautious mode right now. The long clear period a few weeks back laid down a fat surface hoar over the whole range, followed by some new, and since then we haven't had sufficent snow or solar radiation to pull down the new and/or wipe out the hoar.

How big is that cornice on top? Could you have cornice bombed it?

Learn from this one mang. No one around here wants to see you in a body bag.
