    Skier killed in B.C.avalanche
    WebPosted Jan 9 2004 07:32 AM PST
REVELSTOKE, B.C. - A backcountry skier from the U.S. has died in an avalanche in the mountains 50 kilometres east of Revelstoke

The 46-year-old man was part of a group of 12 skiers from Colorado, accompanied by two guides in the Mount Justin-Mount Devine area.

The slide carried the man 300 metres down the mountain, where he struck a tree and was partially buried.

Revelstoke RCMP Staff-Sgt. Randy Brown says the man received treatment almost immediately because a doctor was part of the group.

"However, the severe trauma was such that when he arrived at Queen Victorian Hospital (in Revelstoke) he was pronounced dead. None of the other skiers were involved in the avalanche or harmed," he says.

Brown says it appears the man was killed by the impact with the tree and not from the slide itself.

The victim's name hasn't been released pending notification of next of kin.

The Canadian Avalanche Association said the slide danger in the region Thursday was rated as high.

The fatality less than two weeks before the anniversary of a massive slide last year that killed seven people on the nearby Durrand Glacier.

Man! you never know when your number is gonna be called.

Even in a guided tour we lost this guy scary, I guess nothing is safe.

Whats up with going out on a day where "The Canadian Avalanche Association said the slide danger in the region Thursday was rated as high" ? . is that standard procedure?

"The group was skiing about 500 yards from the Selkirk Lodge when the small slide carried the victim down the mountain. The avalanche was estimated at about 80 yards wide and ran for about 300 yards down the slope."

At first, I thought this might be a nordic skier, but then I looked at the lodge's site:

It would have been dicey to walk out the door of that place in high danger conditions.

    RIP, dude.

    OK more specifically:

The pic is from the Selkirk Lodge's site. I don't where exactly the slide took place.

Apologies, just noticed that info wasn't in the original story.
