Mr. Kemmerer, will you please build a new tram and name it in honor of Doug Coombs?

It would be a fitting tribute to a true fallen hero.

Sorry to add another post, but it seems like an idea that would make sense and receive strong support. The mountain and Doug were connected in so many ways, and his banning led to his winterly expat status.

Aspen skiing company just awarded a lifetime pass to Gretchen Bleiler for winning silver in Torino. It seems that naming a lift for a lifetime of achievement would be an appropriate remembrance for Doug.

Anyway, it would be a cool gesture.

Sort of. They (JHSP) had been trying to get him for a while.

He was skiing an area below the headwall (near Pair-a-chutes), which was rumored to be the site of the freeskiing comp that year. As it turned out, that rumor was just a ruse to throw competitors off the trail and get them to spend time scoping that area -- while keeping the real comp site (Alta 0) a secret so that everyone would be on a level playing field (or so that was the thought).

That area was closed on that particular day. DC claimed that he entered below the closure signs; JHSP argued otherwise. He wasn't the only one to poach that area that day, but he also didn't run from patrol like the others as he was confident he was in the right. It became ski patrol vs ski corp....and everyone knows how it played out.

The policy here is that if you get four strikes (4 corners clipped), you're out. Many JHSP'ers threatened to quit if that policy was scrapped -- even if it was an exception for the "ski ambassador".

    Years later, all was forgiven.

I think Doug had the ultimate revenge as that prompted him to go to Europe and truly realize the vision of his camps and ski guiding...and freedom.

    RIP Doug.

Doug Coombs Memorial Tramway has a nice (but very very sad) ring to it.

    RIP Doug

Great idea. I hope that if they don't name the tram after him, they do something to honor his memory. Even after he left, Coombs and JH were inextricably linked in my mind.

If a petition would help, there are a ton of free online petition hosts out there. Not sure which ones are best. It would be interesting to see how much Internet-wide participation we could get.

if i remember correctly he was also booted back in the 89-90 season for poaching the line (i forgot the name, is it 'noname'? ) right next to tower 3 chute. seemed like the dir. of patrol had a hair accross his ass when it came to doug and some of the other big name skiers poaching back then.

someone correct me if im mistaken...
