    April 2006 Tahoe Nukeage Thread

*April fools aside, and no jinx intended*

Just drove 89 from Squaw to South Lake....first car, first tracks, hyperspace nukeage, and 2 inches an hour of light fluff. Sister is stuck on 80, closed eastbound at Applegate, Mrs. 666 is stuck at Twin Bridges on 50, closed eastbound there. Shoveling the driveway...why bother.

Its under 2 hours from April and here's what it looks like at lake level...

    Since this morning...

    Street with snow...

    Backcountry...

    April Fools Day

Its no joke. We are going to have a fuckin Saturday BIG POW DAY EVERYWHERE. In April.

On a serious note looks like avalanche danger will be Conciderable tomorrow, Who knows what will be open and when.

doesn't seem to be blowing much here. Just coming down steady and fast.

From other reports I see coming in it sounds like south shore is getting alot more than what I'm seeing. Hopefully that changes or at least equals out.

Ok what the funk 666, you just drove down to S. Lake from Squaw?? How. Because we just checked the road closures at 10pm and it said 89 was closed at Emerald Bay. So what time were you going through there? Did you sneak by somehow, I suspect? Ok come to think of it you probably were there about 9pm...so you must have sneaked by.

Anyeeeway......Lego and I are probably stuck here tomorrow unless 89 opens (doubtful) or unless we decide at 4 in the morning to go around the East side of the lake - which is not practical...nor something Lego wants to do...boo.

I just drove back to Tahoe-Donner from Northstar. Its definitely nuking. I have about a foot of fresh at the end of my driveway (it was pretty clear when I left at 5). I was plowing snow with the front of my MDX on the last stretch to my house. I live at about 6300ft. All my housemates are stuck in Auburn. One took the access road up to Dutch Flat and said 80 was a parking lot. People are sleeping in their cars waiting for the road to re-open. It does look like its going to clear out in a couple of hours, judging by the radar view on Weather Channel.

I'm looking forward to first chair at Alpine tomorrow. Our planned Radar speed check after my race is officially called off. I suspect the race will get called too, but we'll see.

We should have a bunch of hard-boot snowboarders in the lineup for first chair, if they can all get there. See you tomorrow.

Hwy 88 is closed both directions to Kirkwood. Its an island and there is no alternate route.

IS CLOSED FROM 3.5 MI EAST OF SILVER LAKE TO KIRKWOOD /CARSON SPUR/ (AMADOR CO) - DUE TO AVALANCHE CONTROL - MOTORISTS ARE ADVISED TO USE AN ALTERNATE ROUTE

IS CLOSED FROM 2 MI EAST OF KIRKWOOD TO 5 MI WEST OF PICKETT'S JCT /CARSON PASS/ (ALPINE CO) - DUE TO HEAVY SNOW - MOTORISTS ARE ADVISED TO USE AN ALTERNATE ROUTE

And Highway 50 perhaps? No go either. Chain controls from 4000 feet and closure over the pass:

IS CLOSED FROM TWIN BRIDGES TO MEYERS (EL DORADO CO) AT 2331 HRS ON 3/31/06 - DUE TO AVALANCHE CONTROL - MOTORISTS ARE ADVISED TO USE AN ALTERNATE ROUTE

CHAINS ARE REQUIRED ON ALL VEHICLES EXCEPT 4-WHEEL-DRIVE VEHICLES WITH SNOW TIRES ON ALL 4 WHEELS FROM POLLOCK PINES TO MEYERS (EL DORADO CO)

    80 remains open, barely.

100 MPH winds reported over the top of Slide Mountain.

Odd... down at the bottom of 395/431, not really windy at all; it's snowing hard, swirling in every direction, but no gusts to speak of.

    At 12:30 am...

Mrs. 666 has been sitting in the car solo for 3.5 hours at Twin Bridges and said pass is closed for avalanche control and everyone is turning around. Barely had cell coverage...and lost the connection. I have no idea where she should stay the night....SUCKS!!!!!!!

maybe it's the fact that we had such an insane December and January, but I can't help but hate you guys right now. I've skied some of the shittiest weather on the hill the past couple of weeks for absolutely no good snow(read dust/crust).

none thelesss. rip it up tomorrow.

I drove from Oregon back to Reno last night via Shasta/Burney/Susanville. Holy shit, the carnage! Cars, trucks, RV's, small cars...off the road, in the ditch, sideways, 10 mph, people with hazard lights on while driving, retards stopping in the middle of the highway to get out and check things out.

It was actually one of my more harrowing snow driving experiences, and I've done a lot of snow driving. This shit was wet, it was 36 degrees out, and instead of being on top of it and packing it down, I was plowing thru it like freshly poured concrete. Can you say Garden Hose* Effect?

*When crossing a garden hose at a shallow angle on a bicycle, the front wheel will try to track along the hose. This can really fuck you up.

Anyway, got out to take a piss near the Shasta ski area and the new accumulation looked so tasty. It was snotty wet however. I fell asleep seeing the hyperspace nukeage that had been baked into my mind from the non-stop 200 miles of 50 foot viz snow action from Shasta to Susanville.

Don't ask why I'm confined to the condo right now.
