Yup, 15 years is an amazing run for a bigger dog. I can only imagine how much his passing hurt you. Take care and maybe down the road a new pup will find its way into your life and heart again.
Dogs are the best, no question. I still miss my guy, Maverick.
Now, we have these two guys. Lucky is the GSD-mix and Duke is the full-blown, Mexican street dog.
I recently took them out for their first time to work trails with me. They were stoked, ripping up and down the trail and having the best time in the rain.
Quality animals, these hounds...
I post this as a reminder to those of you going through it with your pups. Hang in there and take comfort in the great life you gave your dogs. Be well!
Biopsy confirmed it is a sarcoma but not if it’s Hemangiosarcoma or osteosarcoma. Either way it doesn’t really matter. Not sure why but the biopsy incision is like 4” long. Rocky tore his stitches 5 days after. The swelling from the tumor is so bad it’s putting a lot of pressure on the wound. They repaired it yesterday and put a compression bandage on it but I’m worried he tore it tonight again while pooping. He doesn’t really seem to be in pain and was doing pretty well despite his distended leg. Was very happy, good appetite etc. Now I’m worried that this biopsy wound is going to take his last weeks or months before the cancer does. We can’t tell if he tore his stitches with the compression bandage but I don’t know what we’ll do if he tore him a second time. His leg is 3-4 times the size of his good leg.
I don’t know that he has enough time left to put him through an amputation. Part wants to because he is still enjoying life but I also feel like that’s just me desperate to hang on.
Another thing just eating at me is if this was all caused by us following the requirement of the adoption agency we got him from and having him neutered at 20 weeks. He is a very lanky dog and I’ve read that early neutered dogs grow taller and are more prone to joint issues. His leg issues started with a luxating patella that he then injured again. Then the cancer appears in that same injured leg and there’s quite a bit about how trama and repeated injuries are where cancer starts. Can’t stop thinking that neutering him that time caused his leg injury which is now taking his life at 6.

There’s no sense in thinking anything you did caused this cancer.
There is a good chance of making his quality of life better with an amp. Bone cancer is painful. Amp doesn’t just take the tumor away, it takes the pain away. And if carefully done, the incision can be a lot easier to manage than the biopsy incision.

However many are in a shit ton.
What he said^^^^. What does the doctor think if they do the amputation? Will he live a good life for many years?

Dr thought he only had a few weeks tops given the rate the cancer was spreading. He was starting to get tumors elsewhere and they were all growing fast. The incision on his leg was getting pulled open by the tumor growth and there was no way it would heal. The vet said she saw no benefit to amputation and that there was no way he’d recover before the cancer had made him completely miserable or killed him. It was obvious last night that he was in pain. He kept getting up and repositioning. It was extremely hard because he was still able to enjoy life, but his next weeks would have been confined to an Xpen, only able to go outside on brief walks to go to the bathroom. With no good options we decided to put him down today. RIP Rocky.

So sorry Neufox. A terrible decision to have to make but I’m sure Rocky appreciated the compassion you showed him.

Ah...I never read this thread because I'm weak, but I saw Neu mentioned. So sorry man. Just gut wrenching. Vibes.
I knew this day was coming for the last 3 months. Last night I heard Gunther hitting the floor with his paws all night long. This morning I went to help him up and it is as though his rear legs are frozen in a sideways sitting position and he can not stand.
Calls into me vet for advice and Transitions to come to our home to help him move on. My daughter is crushed and states it is all my fault for bringing a puppy home (sheese). I keep the puppy away from him as I know he is to hyper for Gunther.
Anyways, he would of been 14 in a week. It hasn't sunk in yet that I am about to lose my best friend. FML.
Damn, no photo posting of a good boy...
Never in U.S. history has the public chosen leadership this malevolent. The moral clarity of their decision is crystalline, particularly knowing how Trump will regard his slim margin as a “mandate” to do his worst. We’ve learned something about America that we didn’t know, or perhaps didn’t believe, and it’ll forever color our individual judgments of who and what we are.
My buddy and one of them looking down the road. Wait for me, I will come and get you soon.
