I lost my best friend today.

Yes, I have my son, who is also my best friend, and I have my young Border Collie, Shep, who is Connor's great grand-nephew, but I still lost my best friend today and I am so incredibly heartbroken about it.

Connor turned 17 in April and without getting into details, this dog saw, shared and helped so damned much in those 17 years that it's impossible to summarize. He was my wedding gift months before I got married; we saw love, we saw loss and I don't say it lightly that this dog literally saved my life when I was at my absolute rock bottom. He was young and spry to the very end until he fell asleep in my arms today at 4:45pm.

To borrow a phrase from Art, this dog, my friend, was my savior. He's why I'm here today. No question about it.

He ran like a 4 year old until he was 13, then settled for long walks till he was 15. Covid walks around the neighborhood garnered him many, many "you're so handsome!"s and he was the most steadfast hiking buddy me, and now my son, could ever ask for.

Like many, he's been with me through so many life events and stages and I'd be remiss if I didn't give a glimpse into a few. I miss you terribly, Connor; and my heart hurts so fucking bad.

So sorry Bmills, been there too. My dog saved my life.........he passed 11 years ago, still hurts like it was yesterday and if I could do it all over again I wouldn't change a thing. May you find peace and take comfort in knowing he will always be there when you need him.

Aww man, so very sorry for Connor's passing. You gave him a wonderful, full and long life. He was so beautiful. Crying here for sure.

Even though my first border, Pepe, is only 6- out of all the other awesome pups I have had- he is the absolute best, smartest, and most loving. I hope to get as many years with him as you did Connor. What a good boy. I've quickly learned Borders have a way of bonding with you like no other. I hope your heart heals sooner than later but we all know it just takes time. Take care.

Is this the official dog thread? Got a new pup last Wednesday. Crate woes thus far:

How do you get a brand new puppy (8 weeks old) to sleep in the crate? Ours will go in there to eat, he will do a puzzle in there, etc but WILL NOT sleep in there.

The first two night we did crate (in the bedroom with us) with blankets over it, a couple treats in there, a little blanket/towel and he was in there but really not happy about it. Night 2 he HOWLED for like 15 minutes......he just wanted to be near us.

Night 3 and 4 have been crate still in bedroom with the crate door open......but he just wants to sleep on the floor next to where I am in the bed to be as close to me as possible. Last night was great. He slept 1030pm to 330am. I only awoke because of very slight sound. We went out and he peed/pooped and then we went back up to bed. I put a couple treats in the crate and he went in for 5 or 6 minutes then out to sleep next to my side of the bed on the floor again. Sometimes he even goes under the bed on the hardwood to literally be as close to me as possible. I even put a "Puppy mate/Calmaroo" deal in his crate.

Will he learn to love it if we keep up with the treat/puzzles/regular meals in the crate? I see nothing wrong with him sleeping on the floor in the bedroom, but I do want him to start to love his crate and be able to comfortably stay in there for an hour or 2 when he gets bigger. Especially if I have a crate in the back of the truck. Say I have a work appointment with a client and can't bring the dog. I want to say "load up" and have him get in the crate and happily nap for 90 minutes given that it's not super hot or super cold. You know like those good boys you see at the ski area.

Can I train him into this or is he "scarred" forever now and will just not ever like a crazy from being locked in there literally two times ever for 20 minutes while he howled.

It's been two weeks since I had to let Etta go, for 12 years she was my constant companion day or night, certified avalanche dog, grouse hunter, mouse killer, fishing partner, pretty much any outdoor adventure you could think of she was up for it and when that was done she would climb up on the couch or bed to be next to me, you were fucking awesome.
