    Waterfall at Stowe

The waterfall under the gondola at Stowe, how big of a drop would you say that is? I was hoping to hit this year but with the snow we've had this season I was deciding against it, but with the recent snow we've been getting I'm reconsidering. I'll be up there there the 2nd week of march.

Yea, not a terribly nice landing, but I've seen tracks off it nearly every year and they don't have any meat sled tracks leaving the bombhole. This will be my first real "big drop" and I've been scoping that thing out since I was 10.

    Damn I loved that line.
If I remember correctly it’s about 20 feet. Maybe more, maybe less. It’s been … shit, almost 10 years since I’ve been there. Fuck I’m getting old.
The Waterfall was fun but I remember a line between there and Perry Merrill (yes I went to Stowe.com to find that name) that had smaller airs but was more technical. It has more tricky moves instead of one big one. That line to the riverbed was my favorite line on the mountain. I spent so much time in that riverbed I could have gotten a minor in it.

    Memories…

    now I'm getting misty.

Riverbed, as in the glades you can ski between the two peaks? I know there is definitely a riverbed that runs down between the two mtns.

It’s between Chin Clip and the gondola. Lots of little drops, tight turns, and solid ice.

Depending on how big you take the waterfall and how much snow has filled in it is anywhere between like 10 and 35ish or so I'd say. A friend of mine aired it big side on friday (dumb ass IMO). Like Z said it's phat to flat, and by flat I mean really flat. That said if you really want to drop probe the landing first, avoid the existing bomb hole, and if its deep enough hot tub instead of landing directly feet under.

I'd recommend straight up not doing it. I know plenty of people who have hit it and been fine, but you wrack your back pretty good too. Everyone gets all excited about it because its in plain view. There are plenty of other cliffs at Stowe that don't have a flat ass landing. Will you have to search for them, yes, but thats more fun than f-ing up your back.

super flat landing. hit it in 2001 season. you can go big off it, there is a little knob before the actual cliff which adds a bit more height. landing caused a nice raspberry on the cheek from knees. if you hit it wear a mouthguard, for real.... hahaha. really fun if you stick it though, people on the gonjula go nuts. oh to be young and in college again.

Carry as much speed as you can through the trees, ramp that take-off, and clear the trail.

    I'm so f'n serious. Grrrrgggrrr.

just to repeat skiaholic depending on what line you choose to hit and how much snow has filled in at the bottom i've seen it anywhere between about a 10 to 40 footer.....to flat ass landing.

I hit it a few times last year....only when the landing looked to have enough snow to absorb ALL of the landing. heres a few screen shots.

    launching a cork 7 attempt

    my buddy tyson mid air

the bigger line to take prolly around 30-35 feet here. the size definately fluctuates

a three on one of its smaller days

my advice to you. your saying this will be ur first "big" drop. go practice somewhere else. you'll break ur neck on this one. then they'll close it off and no one will be able to hit it.

theres plenty of other cliffs to find with MUCH better landings. plus its right under the gondy, if ski patrol see's you ur ticket/pass is gone.

Close it off if I break my neck?, haha, it's always closed off. Technically you have to duck a rope to ski it in any given situation.

I feel comfortable on stuff up to about 20' (obviously depending on the hit). Would you suggest hitting maybe the hucker's right a few times first? Or perhaps share some advice as to where else I can step it up on this mtn? Those woods are pretty dense so I don't have the time to bushwack during my 4 days there.

I've skied nearly everything I can find at that mtn, from the Rock Garden & Chin to that little like 5 foot wide trail to the skiers left of Goat near the Octagon that feeds out to nosedive. I want to explore that old trail that was one of the originals that goes out to the Trapp Family Lodge if I recall.

So if you can suggest some other spots I can do some dropping I'd appreciate it. The "your gonna shoot your eye out" responses kill me.

I wouldn't suggest hitting any part of the waterfall "a couple times" as the landing is FLLLLAAAAAAT and that's something you do if its deep and just to say you've done it. Practically everyone I know that has said they don't really want to do it again. We have a short clip of it but I can't find it on my computer (paging Tbar...).

If you're looking for some cliffs to hit over or around 20ft there are some near bypass woods and in the balls falls area as well as some other places. When are you coming exactly? I'll try to think of some specific places for you to hit up, PM me and I'll get back to ya.

here's a vid of me hitting it in NOVEMBER of '02...just right click and save as...it's pretty small. our camera was pretty dated (an old hi-8 maybe), hence the low quality from transferring it to a PC.

    http://www.uvm.edu/~rjthomps/stowe/waterfalldrop2.WMV

just some tips...before hitting it i skied around to the bottom and probed the landing for a few minutes to make sure it wasn't sketchy...we had received a ton of snow early season that year, so it was safe, soft, and deeeep. having said that, upon landing i did feel some spinal compression. picture taking a crap, that's probably the best way to land (may have to dig out, but only for like 2 seconds)...you don't want your feet directly under you cause you'll prob snap your tib/fib or your femur - it's FLAT. also don't wanna totally backslap cause then you look like a snow angel right under the gondola. as stated above, there is a small bump/knuckle like 3-5 feet before the edge, that's the high point, and recommended takeoff for making the gondi go crazy.

defiinitely a tough thing to stare at every trip to the top when you're itching to hit it...if the snow's right and you're feeling confident, go for it. if you're having any second thoughts at all, leave it for another day. don't forget to crank up the DIN

Geez that landing is even flatter then i remember. If you hit it from the top, like you should I'd probably just drop it to my hip. Too flat for the stomp. Cool EC sketchy drop, go get it.

Right now the only thing I'm worried about injuring is my anus since my skis have rossi's mounted on them. But yea, definitely only if the snow permits. Hopefully we can get some dumpage.

Not as many people would see it but you'd avoid the binding enema or spinal compression. Which is better?

This is the type of stuff that makes Meathead Films stuff so go. Get after it.
People should learn endurance; they should learn to endure the discomforts of heat and cold, hunger and thirst; they should learn to be patient when receiving abuse and scorn; for it is the practice of endurance that quenches the fire of worldly passions which is burning up their bodies.
