I just skied my run at the Snowbird FS Comp

No dick waving--just a sigh of relief and some second-guessing.
It was kind of a cluster up there. The road was closed until 10:30, so the running order had no significance whatsoever when I made it up there. I was one of the first to arrive from the canyon crowd. I arrived to find the tram closed so I took Little Cloud and promptly went to Tower 3. Plan A for the qualifiers was for West Baldy, but the weather has really thrown a wrench in things so they moved to Plan B--Tower 3.

I got over there and looked down for the first time this year. Sweet. Hadn't taken a run on Tower 3 yet THIS YEAR and hadn't even taken a warm-up run for the day. Next thing I know I hear "3-2-1 dropping".....and I'm off. The rest is a blur.
Hit a 10-footer up top, tried to maintain some speed into a 15-footer in the middle section and pointed it to the bottom air (which I didn't know from a hole in my head). I took a quick pause as I rolled up to the air and promptly dropped an easy 10-15 footer.
All in all, I feel alright. I skied a fluid, clean line and stomped my airs. I only wish I would've skied it a little faster. I felt like I knew the line well enough to go 3/4 speed, but not quite full throttle. This is my first comp, and from what everyone has told me, for the qualifiers, it's most important to ski fast and clean with solid smaller airs. Mostly--I'm just stoked to have done my best given the circumstances.
On a more meat-wagonous note, my buddy from the Bird just called and said Life Flight just picked up a competitor that full on broke his femur, patella and tib-fib. Gnarly. Super gnarly.

I'd say for your first comp you should be happy that you skied fluidly and aren't the guy with the season ending completly fucked leg injury. Props to you, and good luck to that guy.

I've been thinking of entering some comps here. The only thing that keeps me back is just the fact that I know I am nowhere near good enough to win or place, so I just don't want to go out there and embarass myself. Then again, skiing is abotu having fun and pushing your own personal envolpe right?

You never know till you get out there, and there's nothing that will push you to a new level like a little competition. Do it.

Good job dude, I hope you make the finals (fingers are crossed). The weather was tough, what a way to start your first comp. I bet Tower 3 was sweet; we skied that area last week and it was good but we've gotten a LOT of snow since then. Let us know how it goes and we'll probably see you up there Fri-Sat.

And the idiot above, WTF? There are a lot of retards around here lately.

To anyone who rolled out the gate today and did their line in a comp:

edit: had to make that a five finger salute.

Thanks all. The snow was definitely hero snow. Had I known the venue a leetle bit better, I would've liked to have gone a bit bigger. Oh well. I hope to find out tonight if I'll advance, but that depends on whether they get through all the skiers today or not. As for the idiot above, oncoming traffic can be found almost anywhere, you should check it out sometime.

Nice work. That sounds like a good run to me. I'm sure you'll be in.

I wish I would've registered early in the year. Just too much going on with the move. Hopefully I can join you next year.

No Tip, the idiot above your post. Someone always has to shit on some else’s stoke around here lately, it's the reason I don't post about skiing much anymore.

It's funny, in skiing with Griz in the past, I always thought he should enter some of the comps; such a solid and fluid skier. Way to get after it Griz!

Nice Grizz. Good job on your first comp. So perhaps it should be a Snowbird day over an Alta day tomorrow?

    The Qualifier Re-port

i got in my car a bit after 6:30am this morning....was probly 6 or so cars from the roadblock in LCC, and according to the clock in my car it was 10:40 when we started moving. Thats about 4 hours in my car this morning. SO SICK! i can't even tell you how bad I had to pee. driving up.....everyone else turned off and i was the first car going up the access road (to park there for the bird) but they were still clearing the snow, i took a detour to the alta lot (to give them time to clear a little) where i would have been the first car coming up the canyon to park, but i had to turn it around, saw a few maggots still heading up, and i hope they had a sick day up there! (i had one run all day, woOt)

aaaaanyway....the qualifier. . . so i find out it's true, the tram is closed, so i hit gadzoom to little cloud and as i get off little cloud the lifty is yelling "We're closing the lift!" The wind was pretty gnarly. head out the traverse to tower 3 where there are a handful of dudes waiting to go. one or two showed up behind me, but thats about it. So they all finished, and they had gotten through about 35 of the 100 competitors. and no, definitely not in order. When i first rolled up, there was one guy on his cell phone with someone else at the bottom of the venue who was trying to help him with his line (since, as griz stated, the original venue was west baldy, which everyone inspected all day yesterday).

so i hung out with Swany at the top of the venue when those first 35 were done. He was trying to coordinate everyone, and found there were some officials and about 50 athletes waiting at little cloud, and they were ready to walk. and by walk i mean, walk UP TO THE VENUE. Just as they were making sure it was cool with the Bird to do that, they got the lift running. it was close to 1pm at this point. finally a mass of competitors arrived to the start. there was a short hold for the fog and then they were underway again. they ran a few guys and then rounded up all the girls to get them finished. about 10 competitors in, a guy named John (i think) from JH (i think) got caught up on a rock while trying to send that rock band at the lower lookers right of the venue. I couldn't see it from the top but i heard the collective wincing of everyone else that could. and it didn't sound good. the guy at the start announced that he was probly going to be airlifted and it was going to be a while. So i had to bail for work but I saw the helicopter flying up the canyon as i drove down.

It looked like it was finally starting to clear when i left, so -hopefully- they got everyone through, but they still had 60-ish ppl left around 2pm with a long hold for the injury (and good luck to that dude! i hope he has insurance or a rich sugar momma, and heals up alright).

I don't have results, so it would be rad if someone could update us later on the what-what with the qualifier.

    word to your moms.

Way to go! Even if your not going to place, its still being up there and pushing yourself, being with the other skiiers. It sounded like it would be a great time. I really wanted to this year, but I lagged on the sign up and didnt catch a spot. Way to be, and I'll see you next year!
