“You know it’s going to be good when you hear bombs going off…”
That phrase always sends a high voltage surge of excitement through my body on a powder day. It was roughly 12 years ago when I first heard that saying, as that day ended up being one of my most memorable powder days ever. It’s almost a given that when the bombs are being dropped or shot, it’s gonna be pretty darn good.
Powpig stoked @ 7AM:
We were maybe halfway up the skin track on our first run when the helio soared by and moments later the fireworks began. The next words spoken, “Well, you know it’s going to be a good one when you hear bombs going off”.
It was on….
You could feel the energy rise in the air moments after as we both pushed it into high gear to get as many laps off the east face as possible. I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone skin so fast with Spatulas and Alpine Trekkers. Made it up to lift gulley in a few minutes to a trackless field of deepness. Powpig dropped in first and quickly disappeared into the abyss. He had a contrail of cold smoke just hanging in the air behind him. The ingredients were all into place: Cold temps, no wind, lots of moisture, dry air.

A couple more laps were in order before calling it a morning. Made it down to a rapidly filling parking lot by 8:15AM. Took a quick Puerto Rican shower and was walking into work by 9:15 AM. Only 15 minutes late. Not bad, considering I was on the verge of blowing work off all together.
