Just had 2 pair done at Start Haus on Donner Pass rd. Price is $30.

    http://www.starthaus.com/

They are pretty busy so call ahead if you only want to leave your skis overnight.

Start haus also just did a nice job with a tune & grind to fix some early season nicks on my 6 stars.

Granite Chief also does it. i think it is $40 or $45.

probably more fun to just get hotboxed and then go ski shopping

I just stopped in to Start Haus. They told me they want $90 per session to hotbox skis or a board. They recommend 3 sessions (progressive waxes - that part makes some sense). That seems awfully expensive. Anyone know of another option in Tahoe? I'm expecting a new board soon and would like to really treat it right from the beginning.

OK. I just double checked. I got wrong info. Its $30/session so $90 if they do 3 sessions. That's more reasonable.

I'm no alpine racer and while the hotbox is awesome, I would just do the $30 one with something like swix ch or baseprep88, dominator baseprep, toko yellow. The baseprep formulas are probably btter as they allow for max saturation and have some harder additives in them. Then put iron on something harder after that. Don't scrape too often, just iron on a lot of wax, let the skis cool completely and then take another pass with the iron, keep working your way up to something harder. Do scrape in between, just not everytime. I hope that made sense.

I have had plenty of experience with different hotboxes and techniques working at nordic ski shops and have thrown my apline skis in them a bunch.

i concur with powwrangler. while 1 session in the hotbox would be worthwhile (or you could just wax a few times before taking them out the first them, then wax after each session for the first few sessions), 3 hotbox sessions is overkill...unless you're a racer.

    swix sells some baseprep wax.

also, you can build a hotbox on the cheap. you just need a bit of wood & a lightbulb/socket. really...that's as much as it would take. moderate temp + enclosed space + 12h would be really good.

What about just leaving them in the sun? E.g. here in Oz we get the occasional day over 100°F in the summer. I've often thought about leaving skis out for a few hours over the middle of the day in the sun.

I do that every spring while eating lunch when skiing.
Let them get good and hot then pull the yellow wax bar down them and it runs like butter. I ain't into all that fancy polishing, so it works just fine after I lose the coat of wax I started with in the morning.

that's pretty good. what kind of wax are you using?

the warm temp wax i've got doesn't melt (well) until it hits 230F, so your bases must be getting pretty warm.

tell me you at least scrape 'em.... skiing when the wax wasn't scraped would f- up the handling & make 'em slower than w/o wax, most likely.
