The US Forest Service is the process of evaluating and addressing pedestrian safety concerns at the summit of Berthoud Pass. During a recent private meeting with Forest Service personal, the Friends of Berthoud Pass was informed that an overpass is being considered. When asked of our opinion, we answered that any project of this scope should undergo full public scrutiny and comment. In response to this request, the Forest Service has agreed to hold an invite only forum on November 2nd to discuss this issue. All the major stakeholders including the Friends of Berthoud Pass will be in attendance. As a voice of the recreating public, the Friends of Berthoud Pass would like to solicit input on this subject matter from users of Berthoud Pass.

Please complete the below survey in order to help the Friends of Berthoud Pass develop our position and make the opinion of the recreating public known to the decision makers in the process.

Please copy and paste the body of this survey into and email titled “FOBP Survey”, answer each question in the space provided and email to fobp_info@yahoo.com. We appreciate your input. If you have any additional questions, please don’t hesitate to ask.

    James Drewett
    Treasurer, Education and Access Coordinator

    5. Please detail the reasons for your above opinion.

    6. Would you be in favor or alternative including but not limited to an underpass or enhanced cross walk? (yes/no)

    7. What suggestions do you have for alternatives?

    8. Comments: please use this section to add any of your opinions and views not covered in the above questions.

    Thanks

A few tunnels would work. One from the beginning of the switchbacks on the Empire side to the end of the switchbacks on the WP side. Second a tunnel from Nederland/Eldora area to WP. And while you’re at it, a tunnel from Georgetown to Dillon would be nice. Tunnels rool, just ask the Swiss.

I'm sure the Forest Service has sufficient funds to do this.

And email sent with more realistic suggestions

email sent. good discussion topic for sure.

no matter how many times you "look both ways" up there, its guaranteed that some giant truck pulling a trailer going 50mph in a 35mph zone comes flying around the corner as soon as you are in the middle of the road. scrambling out of the way on icy road surface in ski boots while carrying your pack, skis etc is not easy.

Just out of curiosity... with the exception of aesthetics and possible environmental impact, what potential down-side would there be to having an overpass up there?

yeah, those would both be perfect examples.

What's gonna be the walkway clearance of the roof, gotta be at least 400cms to allow passage of my ridiculously long skis.

Grinding the Berthoud overpass...the next evolution in backcountry steeze.

Definitely a sketch road crossing in all your gear. Maybe an answer could be to put a parking lot on BOTH sides of the pass instead of building the under/overpass. Could we get a few strategic trees cut while we're at it?

Funny you mention that, because actually there are tentative re-forestation plans afoot for some of the old ski runs.

I'm all for reforesting the old ski runs, just not so dense as to take away good lines. There's just a few lines I know that would be oh so much sweeter if one or two strategic trees were gone.

A ski lift at the area could be a nice addition too. Also, there should be a some sort of pass program, where as when you purchase one of these passes you are entitled to ride the lift.

The best solution here is obviously a catapult.

But seriously, one major issue to consider with an overpass is the ramp that would lead to the pass. Walking up a ramp in skiboots when it's frozen over = breaking something before you even start hiking.

Wouldn't a tunnel under the highway elimnate a lot of the asthetics problems? And provide a great areal for safety meetings?

I hope you guys are sending Foggy these ideas. Even if you're half-joking, the more replies we assemble the better able we'll be to influence some of the decisions that affect backcountry skiers at the Pass.

Great input. Please fill out that survey if you would. My job is to represent the collective voice of Berthoud Pass backcountry skiers, snowboarders, monoskiers etc. I know what my opinion is but I'm only one of many.
