    Heres a Tweak to speed up Firefox...

    i know...tech talk...but this is really useful....seems to work best on direct connection cable modems, not wireless...

    forevergeek.com has a useful guide on speeding up firefox for broadband users. basically after getting to the hidden config settings you set the browser to request more data that it usually does.

    1.Type “about:config” into the address bar and hit return. Scroll down and look for the following entries:

    network.http.pipelining
    network.http.proxy.pipelining
    network.http.pipelining.maxrequests

    Normally the browser will make one request to a web page at a time. When you enable pipelining it will make several at once, which really speeds up page loading.

    2. Alter the entries as follows:

    Set “network.http.pipelining” to “true”
    Set “network.http.proxy.pipelining” to “true”
    Set “network.http.pipelining.maxrequests” to some number like 30. This means it will make 30 requests at once.

    3. Right-click anywhere and select New-> Integer.

    Name it “nglayout.initialpaint.delay” and set its value to “0”.

    This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it receives.

    4. Right-click anywhere and select New-> Boolean.

    Name it "browser.turbo.enabled" and set its value to "True"

    i found this over on tappersection, and it does REALLY work.

    Or just use this extension. I haven't played with it in a while but as I recall, it does the same thing.

    Extentions are handy dandy, but it's mostly personal preference.

    These are great, but just a word of warning. I have heard in the past that these tweeks have some minor drawbacks. For one, they work better if you have broadband. They may actually slow down your browsing if you have dialup. Secondly, some servers don't support pipelining and pages may not render correctly. That said, Mozilla has these tweeks on their site and I have used them. They just won't ever be defaults.

    Yes, there's an excellent reason. Mozilla is a giant program. It's a "web-browser, advanced e-mail and newsgroup client, IRC chat client, and HTML editing made simple -- all your Internet needs in one application." Firefox is just a browser. It has a much smaller physical footprint (HD space) and memory footprint (RAM). There's a reason why Mozilla is hidden in the corner of the mozilla.org website. About a year ago or so, the Mozilla foundation decided to split up Mozilla. So they're phasing out the big app and everyone is mainly working on the separate parts: Firefox (web browser) and Thunderbird (email client). Why'd they do this? Because the vast majority of people just used the web browser portion of the app. Nobody needed all the rest of the junk, and it was just slowing things down and taking up space. I hear that Thunderbird is really good too.

    I forget what brought me to it but there were a couple of features I liked. The other was to go to thunderbird and get spell check in it. I've been pleased with both and can't think of a reason not to switch.

    What is this "dialup" of which you speak?

    That is because some developers don't write their pages to W3C specs or insist on using proprietary technologies like ActiveX.
