Is this the same Blatten just outside of Zermatt? If so, we had lunch there when skiing Zermatt many years ago. Had this amazing mushroom soup, so good. Situation sounds bad. Hoping for the best for the town.

It has happened! Allot of debris landed on the glacier and now it gave way and a lot of rock came down and partly burried blatten. There is a drone video.
At the end you see a car in the carpark? The village was evacuated since last week. Hope nobody went home to pick something up. Feed the fish or so.

    Damn.

Do they just plan for the upper valley to become inundated at this point or what? Or try to cut in a stream channel before it finds its own new path?

Man, that is a lot of fucking debris. Thats too much debris to be move easily. Looks like that river is gonna back up into a decent size lake before it can over top the debris pile. So how do they move forward from this? Are those houses insured against landslides? Will they rebuild the town where it is or will they move it someplace else?

If I remember right, there was a landslide after of the nz eq’s that resulted in a temporary-ish reservoir. No village was affected, though.

... and this was just the glacier collapse. The main event is when the mountain shoulder fails!
