What's the difference in how I ski?

I was looking at some Liberty skis recently. I told them I'm looking for skis-for-trees on the East coast. Like VT & NH and was asked "What type of skiing do you do? Freeride, Directional Freeride, All Mountain, Powder, or Freestyle?" Someone care to explain the differences besides powder? I ski whats in front of me. Bumps, groomers, powder, ice, trees and some smaller drops. Thanks for helping me understand the lingo.
Take a sniff. Pull it out... The taste is gunna move ya when ya pop it in your mouth!

If you told them that you are looking for some East Coast tree skis then it's pretty self explanatory what kind of skiing you will be doing. Call Parlor and make a trip to Boston. Im sure they can make what you are looking for.

Go with their Radian 92 unless you ski backwards. It's perfect for what you are describing.

Your description --east coast trees--should tell a decent ski shop more than any of the questions they asked you. Find another shop. Meanwhile--freeride basically means off the groomed trails in soft snow maybe with jumping off natural features. It implies steeper terrain. Big mountain means the same thing plus ego. Directional means you don't need a ski that can be skied backwards. Freestyle basically means park. All mountain means both groomed and off the groomed, hard snow and soft, smooth and bumps. The reason they asked you that question is because those are the terms the manufacturer uses to categorize their skis and the salesperson doesn't actually know anything about what they are selling so they want you to pick a category so they can pick a ski in that category.

    OldGoat FTW.

Nobody else wanted to say it.

Sounds to me like a young shop guy trying to do his job but a bit too young to read the room.

I don’t know if you need another shop, per se, they all have guys like that. Just chat it out. Kid is probably doing his best to stoke you out but doesn’t speak any other language than bro-bra.

Skied with my kid yesterday and he fell skiing backwards on Cochises. See, if he had had a non directional ski he could have saved himself the humiliation. And if he had proper goggles instead of sunglasses he wouldn't have cut his nose. The proper gear is important.
