    The GNAR Scar Thread

This thread is for your ski scars, and tattoo ideas. I’ll start us off with a freshie. 5 mph skiing mank-soup at Squaw after a week of 60 mph 5k groomers at Revelstoke, I headed out in the storm on Thursday to scout the snow for what was looping to be an epic Friday, the first real low day of the season. (Although the surprise Silverado morning on Wednesday was sublime, thanks MTN OPS/Patrol. Pulled up to stop and as I pivoted my skis the left tip hit something under the snow. In slow motion, my heel (din 13) released but my right didn’t. The ski came pop and I toed out to the left. Imagine a big slow tele turn right into the freshly tuned edge and rail sliding it from the tow piece to the tip. I know right away I was in trouble. Felt the wetness and the big gash in my ski pants. Clipped back into the ski and skied down the absolute crap on one-ish leg. Skied to the door of the clinic, started leaking all over their carpet. Spent the next 24 hours getting fixed up. Bunch of sutures on the inside to reconnect the IT band and the ~20 staples to close it up on the outside. Then we reopened it for surgery to really get in there and clean it out around 2 am and sew/staple again. Might finally get a tattoo. Low Dins Kill 0-18 along the staples https://imgur.com/a/xFffYYT https://imgur.com/LRj3M07https://imgur.com/EQAKCiL [/img]https://imgur.com/kQ0A4Qm[/img]

Your pics don’t through. My phone sucks.

Anyway- as on theme as I can be with this decrepit site— a list of injuries.

    Achilles tendon torn.
Knee to chin. KO. Six stitches.
Left shoulder dislocated twelve times before surgery. Ten times after.
Right shoulder dislocated nine times before surgery. Ten times after.
    Right knee ACL reconstructed.

My left knee is the only joint on my body that has not seen surgery.

Tattoos— I have thought hard about High Dins Low Standards.

But in all honesty I don’t think it is true anymore. I am tired of being hurt.

I lost the ancient TR back on the powmag boards. We were scoping out some chutes on Norm's at KW, saw they didn't go, and were leaving. Clipped a shark tooth on the way out, toe pre-released and did a slide for life over scree. Managed to arrest before pinballing down the chute ending with a 20' drop to rock. Left side of my body was purple, hip swollen up bad for months but nothing broken. Can still feel the subdermal hematoma bump on my left hip 24 years later.

Still won't touch a marker binding.
Wait, how can we trust this guy^^^ He's clearly not DJSapp

I have a big 10" scar from liver donation
And a pair of scissors tattooed leading into it
And Hank Hill from king of the hill, dressed as a pro wrestler with the words "PRO PAIN" tattooed above him

No pics but I have matching scars on my back--T2-4 fusion after tumble for life on Chute 75, and my chest--replaced ascending aorta. Along the lines of bleeding all over the ER carpet--I gashed the meat of my palm, muscle bulging out, bleeding hard, wrapped it up and drove myself to the ER. The nurse in the carpeted triage area wanted to see it. I told him bad idea. He agreed. (Then I had to teach the intern how to sew it up.)

Skiing at Huntah in the 90’s ,planted a pole downhill , It didn’t come out, It ended up in my stomach and over the top ballet maneuver unintentionally . I had crappy pole grips that trapped my thumb, fortunately it didn’t impale my spleen, heard a pop and felt very lots of pain . One UCL surgery later I have 100% mobility.
Not much of a scar but get a twinge every so often.

How did that tumble get going? I like to try to ski that in less than 60 seconds when it isn't good snow and that can be a slide for life sometimes.

    The GNAR Scar Thread

    Damn, man, that’s brutal
    Glad you’re otherwise ok
Not sure you even need a tattoo, that scar will be plenty (or am I missing some metaphorical intentions?)

    ^^^Second that

    My skiing scars
    - plate and four screws hold C6-7 together
    - plate and eight screws hold my right wrist together
    - a bolt was inserted in humerus to tie supraspinatus muscle back on, accompanied by repair of SLAP tear - scars are pretty small
    - Kevlar mesh was used to join my right Achilles tendon back together when it ruptured

They took all those staples out and then added more later so double the beauty.

^^^ I had a similar injury but not skiing related
Punched a guy in the face in hockey game and severed the extensor tendon of middle finger
Three layers of stitches- to reattach the tendon, the meat in the middle then the outer skin. Done with a local anaesthetic so watched the whole thing
Hurt like a motherfucker for quite a while after.

I imagine your leg did too

Maybe your tat could be a red circle with a diagonal line thru it…

More of a shame/foolish scar than gnar: laid myself down to avoid plunging into a solid thicket of young conifer growth only to land on a buried broken off stump. 8"of intestines lighter, I've got a a pubis to sternum scar with lots of stitches - I was too squeamish to count.
