PRP is made by spinning a patient's blood in a centrifuge to separate and concentrate platelets, which are cell fragments in blood that help clot. The resulting PRP solution is then injected into the injured area.

Anyway, total baddass friend of mine was out of service all of last season with pain and loss of ROM in both elbows. She has a lot of miles on for a 40 year old but not really in the elbow joints.

I have been having elbow issues (golf) and I do have a lot of miles on the elbows/wrists (Kayak and rowing) as well as some trauma.

I called her to see how she was doing and so far she has improved enough to go back to patrolling and she credits is all to the platelets. Insurance won't cover it (experimental).

Anyone else have any real world, been there and done that experiences?

I think there’s an old Splat thread on prp. I had it awhile back in a knee, wasn’t a game changer for me. Ymmv

There’s still not great data supporting its use for things like arthritis. There seems to be the best data supporting use for tendon injuries like lateral epicondylitis.

You start with the most well documented and least invasive solutions. If that doesnt work, you go to the well documented invasive solutions. If that doesnt work, you go to the poorly documented least invasive option, and then finally the poorly documented invasive option in mexico.

The whole time you need to balance the risk of the procedure vs how much pain/loss of function you are willing to live with.


All the injection stuff (PRP, Stem cells, etc) are certainly options if aggressive rehab alone isnt working and your issue is not a good candidate for surgery. It is expensive, but i have never understood the thought process of not wanting to spend big on something let your body function well just to save money so you can drive a nicer car, have nicer clothes, take a nicer vacation, etc. If there is one thing to drop money on, its your health. Health is wealth is douchey, but true.

And FWIW, my buddy had multiple rounds of PRP done for his golfers elbow. It wasnt a game changer, and he doesnt know if it was the forced time off to recover and regimented PT that went along with the injections, or it was the injections itself, but he was happy with the resolution of his symptoms. My orthos have given me the option of doing PRP and Stem Cell to help with arthritis in my shoulder, but they cautioned its expensive and not great odds of a beneficial outcome- it should really only be an option if rest/PT/surgery have failed.

I had a series of two PRP injections on my knee this fall. After the first, I had noticeable swelling. After the second my knee swelled up so bad I could not bend it, and my inflammatory response was so severe I felt ill. I ended up having to have 75mL of fluid drained and it took several weeks to get semi-baseline function back.

It was interesting experience.

My wife's father had it done on his knees. He went from not being able to walk at all pretty much, to being nearly pain free, walks the golf course, etc... Data wise, still doesn't seem like strong evidence to support it's use. But lots of anecdotal evidence, like my story above. And some bad stuff too, sorry RolexJr...

No experience with it for chronic / overuse injuries, but my doc did it when he put my achilles back together. I was skiing again ~4.5 months post, when I was told to expect up to a year...so non-scientific, but I feel like it really helped accelerate the healing process.

And FWIW, the benefit of the injections is supposed to be healing/regrowth of healthy tissue... so that thread's claim of huge improvements in less than 24 hours is laughable (or some massive placebo effect). If you're looking for massive improvement in 24 hours, you'll be looking for cortisone/toradol injections... which are straightup miracle workers in the short-term while sacrificing the longterm health of the affected area.


Before folks drop a few thousand on PRP/Stem cell injections, i would suggest dropping a few hundred on BPC157 and TB500 injections to see if those do the trick for you. YMMV.

I really like this synopsis. Having just had my hip resurfaced just before the holidays, I basically had to explain my procedure to about 40 people over the last few weeks. All these options, (PRP, stem cell, etc.), would come up, and I often had to explain each one in detail.

Partially posting here because my search skills are shit too and I’ll be posting an unrelated topic momentarily. Came down with what I’d call Debilitating tennis elbow a few years back. Did a steroid shot and and PT and seemed to knock it back some but a few months later was splitting wood and bam, right back where I started. Was referrred by ortho for PRP, not covered by insurance, and after a very painful injection and about 6 months of waiting the Tennis elbow is gone - fingers crossed it never returns. Pain was awful, couldn’t sleep, use my arm, grip a cup of coffee, nada.
