Hard for me to imagine that most of the Canadians who now spend their winters in Florida will find Victoria to be a suitable substitute. Many places in Mexico certainly would be. For the more adventurous maybe something like the Balearic or Canary Islands.</p>

I'll be very surprised if a significant number of Canadian snowbirds in Florida (mostly from Ontario) sell. Same goes for Alberta-> Arizona.

Honestly, I'll be surprised if any of the of the (supposedly liberal) BC-> Arizona group sells.

The Canadian dollar has never hit 1.30 since it was allowed to float during Pierre Trudeau&#39;s tenure. The highest it&#39;s been since then was somewhere around $1.10 US

OK I know how i fucked that up ^^ I was cooking buddy a burger shooting the breeze with an RPF at the canfor mill he told me I don&#39;t know why they even bothered to fix the tarrifs, but you know what really screws us is if the canadian dollar goes up even 5 cents that year it went up 30cents so that makes more cents

An interesting question is how Canada spends the increased military spending. Right now its integrated with US. But if the most plausible threat Canada faces is the US, changes would be required to face that threat. Take the navy currently the 12 ships of the CPF class are specialized anti submarine surface combatants. The US really doesn't have those anymore so in wartime would be very useful in a battle group. But to replace with same would not make sense as they would be sunk pretty quickly by USN missiles or planes. A different mix of small patrol ships and subs would make more sense. For air force to keep on buying US planes doesn't make sense as US could send a software update and suddenly all Canadian planes are grounded.

Gary,I believe they made out well, but haven't really talked $'s and c's with them on it. They did buy when the CAD$ was high and are selling it now - so I am sure that helped a bit. The FiL (of the "Bob's yer Uncle" ski run namesake on HBM) had a good time building on it with some members of our other NAFTA allies - you know to spread the free trade gospel! I have to think they did ok.

First of all, fuck Trump and the divisiveness he is causing between two countries with such a close shared history. I have a large number of family that are Canadian and live north of the border and will not let Orange Jesus put a wedge between us. He is wrong, the politicians that don't speak out against him are wrong, the people that don't protest against him are wrong, and ignorant fucks that voted for him need to suffer for letting him anywhere near the White House again. Let's see some price hikes on potash!

As far as military capabilities, and I am honestly not trying to be a dick here, but the USN has scores of ships that do ASW very well. Their destroyers and frigates are all very capable at conducting ASW, along with a variety of other missions. What the USN doesn't have a lot of are mine sweepers and often plan for the UK and even France to help with that mission.

As far as the U.S. attacking Canada, it just isn't going to happen under current circumstances. I see zero chance U.S. service members, from the generals to the privates, would follow an order to conduct an unprovoked attack on Canada just to annex it. Just isn't realistic, and from my perspective, would fall in the unlawful order category.

There are well over 100 Canadian military personnel at Peterson SFB here in Colorado Springs and a number of others in Cheyenne Mountain working on some of the most sensitive homeland (US/CAN) defense missions that exist. The military relationship is currently solid as a rock with both sides just laughing at the ridiculous rhetoric from the Cheeto in Chief.

Canadians have every right to be pissed off, but I think the fear of military invasion isnt something our brothers and sisters to the north should be losing any sleep over. And this doesn't even factor in the whole NATO aspect of any of this.

Ok since the retirement of the Spruance class there is no longer a ASW ship in the battle group. Just saying that of the navy sticking to the old where best to help is not a good idea. maybe just on the edge of plausible threat but when someone uses the word annex with regard to a population that is 90% against annexation then the options are only prolonged economic force( the words used) or military action. Also the HMCS Halifax is supper quiet almost sub quiet for a surface ship and as such a very good ASW platform.Canada has go forward like there has been a sea change. Like Lee stated the risk is not zero. In what universe would one have thought that even a question of the US using military force against a NATO member was possible and even more bizzare that in the case of Denmark be answered in the affirmative. The public will demand it and this type of administration may come again. Isolationist and very willing to make "allies" bend the knee and suffer econ hardship for having ties too close to the US. There are a lot of people worrying about invasion. I don't how many times I have had to calm my wife down. Old ladies googling how to make Molotov cocktails is not normal but maybe its the new normal.

Any thoughts that it is sabre rattling about Canada's lack of meeting the agreed 2% of GDP for Defense Spending? 1% in 2014 and all the way up to 1.34% in 2024 is not impressive. Maybe the free-ride is over? https://www.nato.int/nato_static_fl2...xp-2024-en.pdf

I don’t think so because it doesn’t seem to have come up in the meetings. Not saying Canada shouldn’t spend the agreed upon amount, just that there is no evidence of this being Drumpf’s objective.

^^^we discussed Canada shirking international agreements/commitments a few pages ago. Yes, Trump has always been pushing for equal financial responsibility in terms of NATO funding. Trudeau spins it, in his own words, as Canada being the 7th biggest contributor to NATO. That’s like saying a billionaire who pays more in taxes but still only pays at a rate of 15% is somehow justified.

Canada’s own government acknowledges they are not meeting international commitments. This isn’t controversial but it isn’t palatable to Canadians. I wish the U.S. didn’t spend my tax dollars on the military too, but reality tells us something else.

Yeah, going to get interesting in the US with seeing where all the money is being spent. Guaranteed waste in all sectors of the gov't. It is disgusting and I think the stuff we are seeing now is just the tip of the iceberg.

Yes, every US president for decades has complained about NATO members not meeting 2% (this was happening long before Trump come into politics), but in my experience, this is generally targeted at the Europeans since there is a belief that Europe needs to take a greater responsibility for its own defense. Canada definitely gets lumped into the groupo not meeting 2% but I don&#39;t think that has anything to do with the current BS from Orange Jesus. This is just an insecure little man trying to be a bully and possibly play to a few union voters. He might genuinely think he can subsidize the US budget and cut the deficit with tariffs, but I would be shocked if he even had a basic enough understanding of economics and trade policy to come to the conclusion on his own. The big complaint I have heard about Canada is their failure to invest in advanced fighter aircraft to meet their NORAD obligations. Canada canceling their contract for new fighters with Boeing over the Bombardier dispute and instead buying a bunch of beat down old F-18&#39;s from Australia when they were barely able to fly CANR patrols was very frustrating for NORAD/NORTHCOM. Again, nothing to do with this current nonsense, but that is where I have observed frustration from US defense officials in regards to Canadian military spending.

Haha if DOGE was interested in finding out the waste spending in good faith- there would be forensic accountants and transparency. Instead they’re pilled up twenty year old programmers without clearance and defying court orders from Trump appointed judges. How do you square that?

You'll see what Musk shows you and like it.

Polemia is the current pandemic and it was grown in alt-right labs in the United States for export to the world. If you let angry ridiculous rhetoric convince you of anything your annexation is already underway.

I think there is a Musk thread, and a Trump thread in Polyasshat, where it belongs. Could pose the question there. Also, why hasn't this shitstorm thread been moved yet?

    "Maybe the free-ride is over?"

About that free ride, just want to recall the 40K Canadian soldier deployed to Afghanistan from 2001 to 2014 to support the US's venture in the middle east. Any other NATO members do that?

This is why I said to a group of conservatives that you can point out exceptions, but Canada's overall truth and trend has been brotherhood, friendshiep, and the actions of our closest ally on the planet.

Everybody in NATO went to Afghanistan because the US used Art 5. That said some were there in body rather than in spirit as some nations did easy areas and stayed in base all the time.As Trackhead stated been covered but I have to say that in the pantheon of things that Trump has a beef about Canada this one has merit. Others are retarded.

We own it but its 40 billion maybe 20 billion a year. So big but compared to the big stick hanging over head and the change to NA econ its little. Remember there are no Canadian defense companies. Some branch plant stuff so all profits and really not many jobs come from defense spending. That is why defense spending is a good idea for a lot but its not like the US at all. If Canada grew a defense company they just wouldn&#39;t get the big US contracts as suddenly Canada be foreigners. There are no votes in the Senate for .

I repeat that Canadian shipbuilding exists andcould be expanded, and that is probably easier than trying to start a from-scratch defense company.

Agreed. The thing is, EVERYONE is onboard with reducing/eliminating waste spending. You would have to be a corrupt asshole to not think that is a good goal to have.
Does USAID, Dept of Education, IRS, etc, etc need to be audited and streamlined to reduce wasteful spending and have our tax go further/be reduced? Yes. Hard fucking Yes.

But that is not the messaging here, and that is not what is happening. Musk and MAGA intend to dismantle government institutions, safegaurds, and regulatory departments entirely. They arent increasing efficiency by cutting waseful spending, they are increasing efficiency by eliminating any safegaurds that have come about since the robber-baron era.
I constantly hear about how people trust trump and musk because they are so rich that they cannot be corrupted by money. HOLY SHIT, trump is still selling gold fucking bibles and shoes, and literally said he wants to take over Gaza as a commercial resort real estate deal. Musk wants to dispand the EPA and any other organiztion that has put gaurdrails on SpaceX, and is 100% fully intending on making twitter into his original vision for Paypal. These are the two most obviously money/power hungry people of the past 100 years and i am constantly astounded that so many people think the opposite despite ALL EVIDENCE TO THE CONTRARY... including their own fucking words!
