Buckle up b/c unfortunately the EU is next. Let us all hope that the courts strike it all down. Next, Americans and American allies should discuss the laws and premises under which these tariffs are being imposed. It's probably a bad idea for a single entity absent checks & balances to have sole authority implementing such destructive economic policies

John Bolton: I don’t think it’s a strategy. I think it’s a series of neuron flashes. The good news for Canada is, he is not planning on using military force.

You hear all kinds of guesses as to Trump's strategy but i really think he just likes the word and according to Bolton Trump doesnt understand how tarrifs work

mayeb things will change when America pays more for everything they NEED from Canada cuz the reality is we are joined at the hip

Tariffs also poll well with voters. Last year, polls showed something like 80-percent of Americans supported higher tariffs. So I suspect there's an element of "we're gonna build a wall" campaign script happening here. The whole 2016 wall with Mexico, for example, was conjured up by his campaign managers as a slogan for Trump because he kept going off script and they wanted something to anchor the messaging

2 billion worth of commerce a day

Lets see how America feels when everything costs more, probably the big one will be when RUG in the midwest is 75cents a gallon extra cuz of tarrifs on Alberta crude ?

It was all working pretty well, stuff was going back n forth over the border for the auto industry and all kinds of things,

on the radio they gave an example of berries picked on the BC side going to washington for packaging and then crossing the border back into BC to be sold

Trump told you that canadians would love to become the 51st state whereas the reality is everyone is saying fuck you, there are lists on FB telling me which ketchup to avoid cuz its American, the policy is "don't buy american" don't go there, people who were planning vacas down south are no longer going down to America to spend money

And his shitty guitars (that are literally forgeries of an iconic American guitar originally made in 1952, and produced for 64 years).

Gibson hit them with a cease and desist due to design and trademark infringements, but many were already out there.

Tariffs on Canadian lumber should be great for construction employment. Of course, cutting construction might be a good thing, since we're deporting the construction workers.

Re the guitars, if the Trump guitars headstocks don't snap off if you sneeze maybe they're a good thing.

It's gonna be everything. You need our potash for fertilizer. Higher prices for the midwest. Then there's softwood lumber, aluminum, steel, uranium, power from 4 provinces. It's so dumb.

That's what's so dumb. If you want to promote domestic manufacturing you don't tax raw materials. BTW, how do they plan to grow avocados in Iowa? Now's the time to start hoarding guacamole. (And tequila.)

The one article resurrected a good old quote: "it’s risky to be America’s enemy but it can be fatal to be its friend".

Fucking embarrassing. Dumb as shit. And a moronic gamble on the world economy.

One hopes this fails fast and spectacularly so we can end this destabilizing tariff talk as quickly as possible.

Trump's dumb talking point for tariffs is that CA/Mex are letting drugs pour into the USA. Ok - right but are we not the primary party for controlling our borders? WTF - they need to police USA's borders with more scrutiny & rigor than we do? This is so stupid.

Lumber is a commodity so it goes up and down either side of the line based on market price

Met a contractor today who, when I said I’m concerned about material and lumber prices going up, said, don’t worry, our President is going to bring prices down. Whhaaaat?

"drugs pouring in" is simply supply and demand. You'd think a guy whose dad bribed a once prestigious school of economics to pass his dimwit son would know that.

I’m hoping the Mexican govt puts big-ass tariffs on corn imports. US corn production is so heavily subsidized that Mexicans can’t compete in a crop they (Aztecs) pioneered

My favorite comment from the US jingo-types. "Avoid the tariff, you won't pay if buy American". Basically this reveals you as a dipshit.

For the consumer, USA made products that weren't directly impacted by the tariff will raise their prices to match the foreign competitors. But, obviously, plenty of US products are assembled using raw materials/components made in foreign markets so their bottom-line is higher too.

tldr; raise prices on common foreign goods = consumer absorbing the lion's share of that burden regardless
