I'm sure that is good advise to tell the residents of Greenland to sleep well at night until Feb 1 when 500 US troops invade their country. Now that would have been far fetched 2 months ago even laughable but now maybe not.

But the history of Canada is the tale of resisting invasion by the US. That is what pushed Canada together in the first place not wanting to be invaded or part of the US. Will already have an alliance with the US by treaty , NORAD and NAFTA , and the US is breaking them. How can we have further treaties with the US if the US does not honour treaties?

Can you imagine the uproar in the EU and NATO? Does Donnie really want to be Putin? I would like to think he would quickly get his dick caught in Congresses zipper.

Trump's Canada trolling is annoying because it makes annexing Greenland seem like a joke, making it less likely to happen. America should annex Greenland if that's what the people of Greenland want!

If Trump can peacefully convince the inhabitants of Greenland that American sovereignty of Greenland is positive, without causing a conflict, that would be a great accomplishment for any modern president.

They're Danish citizens in a Danish territoty. If the residents of the US Virgin Islands voted to join Britain, should we just let them go?

Greenland is right up Trump's alley, given that it was the original real estate swindle in Viking times (GREENland? Really?)

As far as Canada, maybe Trump would be happy if we just renamed the geese.

Now I know why my son in the Air Force has been doing cold weather training and has been issued cold weather gear. (Arcteryx, among other stuff, not that shit they gave the GIs in Korea.) Hope it's Canada, not Greenland, cuz then he can take his skis.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greenland

"" Greenlanders voted for the Self-Government Act, which transferred more power from the Danish government to the local Naalakkersuisut (Greenlandic government).[20] Under this structure, Greenland gradually assumed responsibility for a number of governmental services and areas of competence. The Danish government retains control of citizenship, monetary policy, and foreign affairs, including defence. ""

Which pretty much makes Greenlanders First Nations whom would say FU ^^ to USA so that sounds "as fucking stupid as something trump would say "

add to that Denmark is part of Nato which means all Nato countries have to dogpile on any country who would threaten Greenland all make what you said " as stupid as if trump said it "

It is by no means a binary situation. It would have to be a three way process. Any agreement would need to go through both Danish and Greenlandic governments. The key element is the fact America can unlock Greenland’s full potential in a way Denmark is incapable of doing. Denmark’s consent would hinge on benefiting from recognizing that reality.

Right, the United States is critical to the security of Europe via funding and many other agreements. So NATO is a reason why Denmark would be inclined to go along with it, not a reason to go against it.

The same goes for Greenlanders. America can afford an arctic strategy capable of countering Russia & China. United States governance and citizenship is much more benevolent in comparison to what those jackals have to offer.

21st century international arctic cooperation is also a strategic reason for Canada to support this too

    the USA WAS critical

    CNN —

As US allies reel from Donald Trump’s weekend comments encouraging Russia to attack European allies if they don’t meet NATO budget contribution goals, multiple former Trump advisers warn in my upcoming book that the former president will seek to formally withdraw the US from the NATO alliance if he wins a second term.

In “The Return of Great Powers”, which will be published March 12, a former senior US official, who served in both the Trump and Biden administrations at a high level, told me that if Trump defeats President Joe Biden in November “the US will be out of NATO.”

“NATO would be in real jeopardy,” John Bolton, Trump’s former national security adviser, agreed. “I think he would try to get out.”

Multiple Trump advisors ( none of whom TRump listened to OR was even capable of listening to ) are telling us Trump will probbaly try to get out of NATO ?

Splain to us why would anyone who deosnt need to would want to be part of America when a lot of Americans don't want to ?

    https://www.ctvnews.ca/canada/are-mo...rump-1.6913801

" an exponential increase " in americans inquiring about moving narth

fortunately its all just Trump bluster so I further I doubt its possible to deport 10 million most valuable illegals who do all the work, or slap a 10% tarrif on Canadain goods and not get slapped back in which case republican congressmen start complaining to the white house cuz all the people who elected them are complaining

American Indians and Alaska Natives are already entitled to free federally funded health care so extending those benefits to Greenlanders wouldn't be a stretch. And I agree American citizenship is great. Much better than European citizenship

Alaska Natives share in oil and gas wealth through the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act (ANCSA) and the Permanent Fund Dividend (PFD)

Obviously, unlike Alaskan natives, this would all be contingent on Greenlanders free choice but if that's what they choose then the positive benefits are enormous

This doesn't make sense. As a part of NATO Greenland as part of Denmark or just loosely in a commonwealth is still protected. The US already has a base. So as long as they want a US presence they can get as much US presence as the US wants to put on the ground. If part of the US they don't have the right to say no you are ruining the land or whatever. Iceland is part of NATO and has no defense spending it just provides land but it has the right to leave NATO and make the Americans leave if America is a giant asshole. Being part of the US means you're part of that giant asshole so you never have the right to make that giant asshole leave.

Right now Canada's only real threat to its sovereignty comes from the US. Which begs the question does Canada need to be in a NATO that doesn't have the US in it? Does Canada need nukes? Can we buy weapons from the US ? is that a good idea seeing how the US now will threaten allies.

Because bringing people in and giving them handouts is gonna sit real well with his base

Trump will need to rise above his base for this to happen. Operation Warp Speed was Trump's greatest accomplishment during his first term. MAGA doesn't like it but he still did it and he deserves credit for it. Greenland could be Trump's great second term accomplishment

Maybe Trump doesn’t have to worry about reelection (one way or another) but the other republicans do.

Yeah, agreed. It's a big ask. Not to mention the narrowest House majority along with probable midterm reversals

This is hopelessly naive in light of what Russia is doing in Ukraine, China is threatening in Taiwan and both are doing in the Baltic, Arctic, Taiwan Strait & Red Sea
