I thought about trying to avoid Chinese made products, it's literally fucking impossible. You can try as you might to avoid US products, more power to you if you can actually do it. I don't think you can to any meaningful degree.

In the end, hoping for the success of both economies is the best outcome. Being a bitter xenophobic asshole won't get you very far.

"Good luck, most of your produce in the winter comes from the US.

Outrage will be an internet flex, but most will lack the willpower and fortitude to create any meaningful boycott."

You are right - this is why one of the benefits of this to Canada is it will incentivize us to diversify to more Mexican produce. This is inevitable as the US deports its farm labour. This will just get us ahead of the curve.

As China, Canada and Mexico import about 30bUSD each from the US this will give us the kick in the ass we need to trade with each other and expand our own production.

The local grocery store was advertising product from Mexico, I can't recall seeing that before, so they know what is up.

It is also happening when the US is about to deregulate food safety. Generally a good time to move to different markets. Deregulation always makes things so much better -like banks!

Worth considering is the roughly $700 billion in annual trade between the countries relative to the size of their economies. $700 billion is about one-third of the $2.1 Trillion Canadian economy but only one-thirty ninth of the $27.4 Trillion American economy

Check back next year, or in three months. Nothing will change. Sure, a few hippies will be paying more for products not made in the US, but most people will go about their usual business without change.

Costco, Walmart, McDonalds and millions of other US products and businesses will still be in Canada, employing Canadians, and selling US products to Canada.

I don't blame you for wanting to try to change something, but I just don't see it being viable.

US and Canada banned Russian oil, but it's still in our cars.

The thing is - it isn't Canada vs. US anymore. It is now US vs world. In the past Canadians would have been standing beside the US - now we are looking for our allies. China is heading to the WTO - for all the good that will do. Mexico and Canada are working on stronger ties The EU is getting ready for a trade war with the US, and there is talk in Canada about us joining that organization. If NAFTA is worthless, why not? We already have close to a NAFTA like agreement with them More importantly I think for the US side isn't the amount of what they get from Canada but simply what they import- to a significant extent it is the materials that they turn into the products they sell both domestically and abroad.

The reason why America will remain Canadas largest trading partner until the end of time: physical distance. Which means lower transportation costs, faster delivery times, less logistical complexity, and more integration. Most of the trade between America and Canada is not raw materials or even finished goods, it is intermediate goods. Canada depends much more on American goods than the US does on Canadian goods. If Canada is to succesfully export much more to China and Europe then those intermediate goods become even more important

Stagnant/declining GDP, rising unemployment, I doubt there's much wiggle room to teeter the Canadian economy based on angst.

I'd hope for stability, but I understand the emotion. The world economy is linked. We try to separate ourselves from China, but it's impossible.

Assured mutual destruction isn't great for anyone.

Canada actions in retaliation do not have to hurt all Americans to be effective. We just have to cause pain to those that support or are aligned with Trump. We can’t allow Trump and his cronies to falsely claim this is a Canada - US dispute.

Yes please. Please continue drinking Oregon pinot and boycotting Kentucky bourbon. We'll do our part by smuggling Canadian maple syrup back south after our ski trips.

Good news Canada! Trump just annexed Gaza! He won't have any time to fixate on Canada. He's going to be busy working on Trump Resort Gaza to worry about Canada.

While Canadians are gravely concerned about their country's well-being, it's very classy to be asking about your vacation.

Annexing would imply that Gazans could stay there. He says the US will take part in the ethnic cleansing of Gaza.

Can I still come up and ski Fernie, or is the TGR Canadian collective turning me around at the border? It was suggested on the CBC by the Yukon premier that charging a toll for Americans drivign thru BC and/ or the yukon would be totally appropo

I’d pay the Canadian surcharge to spend money directly in your economy supporting small business on a ski trip. Not sure how resisting that does you any good.

Got used to being blocked out of Yukon when I lived in SE AK during covid. Like going to Haines Junction across the border, and Whitehorse. Bet those small border towns won't like restricting American spending in their towns though.

After Gaza, can we remove all Canadians from their mountain towns and move in? I'd like a turn up there.

Never stepped foot in Canada during covid, couldn’t. When we moved back to lower 48 we took the ferry.

^^someone mentioned charging Americans to transit through Canada by road. Fair play, but if it discourages that form of travel, towns like Haines Junction, Whitehorse, etc…who see a lot of Americans passing through, will see revenue drop.
