Being black lowers it by about 5 years.

Yale says American life expectancy is lowered by 0.4 years from gun violence, and 0.3 years from alcohol.
And "ten states would see a more than 2-year jump in life expectancy if deaths due to alcohol, drugs, and firearms did not occur, ranging from 2.0 years in South Carolina to 3.0 years in New Mexico."

Per Harvard Health: "those with the shortest life expectancies in the US tend to have the most poverty, face the most food insecurity, and have less or no access to healthcare, all factors that contribute to lower life expectancy. Additionally, groups with lower life expectancy tend to have higher-risk jobs that can't be performed virtually, live in more crowded settings, and have less access to vaccination, which increases the risk of becoming sick or dying...

Trudeau has done a bad job managing Canada's economy. A person could blame falling oil prices when he became PM in 2015 but that doesn't account for post-2019 after oil prices began to rise. The good news is American life expectancy has rebounded since Harvard wrote that article a couple of years ago. A lot of people now dismiss the pandemic but it really did hit hard in the U.S.

These days it's not so much being black that lowers expectancy as it is a problem with high school dropouts. Black Americans tend to be poorer and as a result don't finish high school at proportionally higher rates but the same lower life expectancy problem exists for all cohorts who dropout of high school.

White high school dropouts are dying at even higher rates than black high school dropouts, for example. For some reason the problem is also concentrated in Southern states.

While all the usual suspects like guns, alcohol, drugs, suicide, etc. contribute the main culprit is heart disease. Obesity is the main risk factor. We need more progress treating cardiovascular disease. Hopefully GLP-1 drugs will help, especially as prices fall in the future. In the meantime focusing a lot more attention on cardiovascular risk will do more than anything else to improve life expectancy in America.
