    Just as an aside, carpetbaggers were the good guys during post-Civil War reconstruction. Southerners made it up as derogatory term (see the propaganda film Gone with the Wind) because they opposed democracy, racial equality, civil rights laws, and Northern economic development. "Carpetbaggers" themselves were mostly freed blacks and former Union soldiers along with a smattering of bankers and businessmen. Southern newspaper cartoons from that era, for example, depicted the KKK lynching blacks & carpetbaggers

    Doug gets it. Trade also magically becomes good when it's with a state, not a country. Right now Americans don't need anything that's made in or exported from Canada but when Canada becomes a state all those jobs will actually matter

    We’d get both a better private healthcare system, and public.

    Better than we have now, and certainly better than abolishing private ins. And just being at the mercy of a govt plan like proposed by medicare for all.

    It would take us decades to sort out our own and get the doctors to still show up.
