How much did it snow today? Looked like it was nuking around midday, but now the view from the cams looks pretty weak. I'm hoping that's just the wind scouring the blower off last week's ice?

Another character building day. The top of KT skied amazingly well. Slurpee pow. West Face was buffed perfectly smooth and you could crank it to 10. As the day went on the snow level went from KT base to the top. Eventually Mountain Run was a sticky mess.
Hoping for a decent day tomorrow. It is still raining at 7k right now.
I dunno about all that. The dog almost ate a tree but other than that it was pretty damn nice

I imagine you are glad you stuck with your lodging. Storm cycles are so much fun in the valley.
One of my favorite memories was arriving at KW at 10:30 after waiting for the Spur. Back then, chair 7 was slow, but the base was right at KW Meadow Drive. Being late, I didn't want to look for a spot far from the lift at 6, so I literally parked right at the base of chair 7. It was different times. You didn't need to reserve anything.
As I was headed up 7, which was like a 10 minute ride, I noticed that there were not tracks in Sentinel. I was shocked it had not popped yet. I could also see that chair 10 was open and getting well skied.
I decided to take a lap on 6 just to get a run before waiting in the big line at 10. As I rolled off the top, patrol opened Sentinel
As the crowds worked their way from 10 to the backside I spent the next few hours country clubbing powder with 10 other people across Sentinel and then Palisades. It was a bit more work to do Pali laps back then, as I pointed out, chair 7 was slow. More often than not you'd ski to the shuttle waiting for you and drive over to 6.
Around 3pm people started to return from the backside. Some joined us but most went home. I had fresh tracks too to bottom on my last run of the day.
Love it when something hangs them up in Sentinel and the crowd heads to the backside. Only have three days like that but none panned out as well as this one.

Two years ago during that insane Xmas snow cycle, I remember they popped 6 at like 2:30 PM after the whole resort was closed for 3 days and both passes were closed.
After being snowbound with a bunch of families with kids bouncing off the walls, I got first tracks on Dan Cliff, then second tracks, then third tracks. I was the only one out there who even knew the line existed. Powder was literally thigh deep (and I'm 6'3).
I have some cantable soles for my boots that have been sitting in my parts bin for a while, figure it could be worth going to a shop and having a stance analysis done and see if the soles might help. Sometimes I feel like I have too much pressure/angle onto my inside edges.
Any thoughts on where to go? Olympic bootworks, Starthouse? Or anywhere else I should check out between Truckee and Palisades?

or go over to Best Fit and talk to Saco - also very good
I didn't believe in reincarnation when I was your age either.
Sako is my guy, but Jim is very into body mechanics and race boots. You could try talking to both. Last time I saw Jim it sounded like he was winding down from boot fitting, but I could be wrong.
Yesterday at PT OV it might as well have been a Saturday. It was as busy as I've ever seen. I think the storm was pretty overhyped. Also with the comp going on the freeride athletes from all over the area were rallying around. Combined with difficult conditions for lift openings and it made for LONG lines.
Conditions up at the top were fun. Lower on the mountain (to the top of KT) had challenging breakable and firm ice crusts.
I'm taking the morning off today. Maybe I'll go for a walk in the back country. Skiing in the crowds yesterday was downright dangerous. After being hit last week I don't need to fight that battle.
89 backing up in Truckee…

man I don’t know how people deal with this crap

Called start Haus, they said Jim only does fittings for folks with his personal number these days haha. Will probably go see Sako

Yall should check the SM pages for SAC. They’re facing budget cuts and staffing loss.
I can’t figure out how to c/p the text.

It's not a trivial issue, but with children starving in Africa and Elon Musk taking over the US Treasury it's probably a low priority item for Congress. I'm pretty sure Steven Miller doesn't ski, there isn't enough sun screen in the world to keep him that pale.
The deal is, this will have more of a noticeable direct effect. The changes in foreign aid are more removed for some (though I have coworkers that have loss all of their work and contracts). The changes in HHS, EPA, DHS, etc. will also feel removed for some (though I know several that are directly affect with their day-to-day jobs).
Death by a thousand cuts. It’s part of the USFS general cuts. Will affect all the avi centers under USDA. It’s affecting USFS hiring for wildland firefighters.

It's the old curse of "May you live in interesting times". No shit. Sometimes a village has an idiot, sometimes it's a village full of them.
If you live in the WUI like a lot of us do- I'd advise buying a shovel, a pulaski and a drip torch. Watch a few YouTube videos and you'll be good to go.
"if you plant ice, you're gonna harvest wind..."
I don’t think that this has much to do with USAID or Ukraine but about business interests. In weather, avalanche forecasting and forest management there is a lot of money to be made in the private sector. Tax payers fund the research and the private companies sell it back to the tax payers for a fee. Not a bad business model :/
Getting the government out of weather forecasting (just providing the data for free to private weather forecasting companies) has been a priority of many companies like accuweather and a lot of lobbying money has gone for that cause. What is less known is that the same thing is happening to avalanche forecasting. Support SAC unless you want to pay a subscription fee for your avalanche forecast.
Now is a good time to put pressure on our congressional representatives. While I generally think Kevin Kiley is a sleezeball willing to do anything for power he knows that bringing home the bacon for his district is key to staying in power.
If you want to get specific hit on that both the current federal hiring freeze and lack of funding for the forest service is creating huge barriers for hiring the federal firefighters needed to protect the people an property in his district when the next fire happens. I doubt Kiley cares much about avy forecasts but addressing forest service funding will help that issue.
You can submit comments below, I did on Monday and already got a feasibly thoughtful reply back. If enough constituents yell at them they will listen. https://kiley.house.gov/contact
And finally stoke for the skiing being the best it has been in a month.

Also while Sierra Avalanche Center is dealing with this bs, we can help them out by submitting observations. You can even submit them so that only the forecasters can see it, opposed to public ally viewable, if you don’t want to blow up your go to spot.
https://www.sierraavalanchecenter.or...vations/#/form
Also money donations can help and I would definitely mention your support of SAC to Kevin Kiley. Competition is key and if private companies want to enter the avalanche forecasting space then great but they should provide value above and beyond what SAC does instead of defunding SAC and charging a subscription for their services. If a private company can’t compete with SAC, then they shouldn’t be in business.
Privatizing public safety services related to use of public lands? Low ball FFP bids of those with qualifications that meet the lowest of the bar? Outsource the forecasting and write-up to somewhere overseas or AI? How long before those contracts are preliminarily awarded, contested, re-bid, and finally awarded? How many incidents are considered allowed before it affects CPARS?
Pay to play?
Come on!
Skiing today: my resort observation was that snow quality was elevation dependent. Found some crunchy stuff, but skiing is fun.
Very happy with our skiing today. About as good as inbounds can ski on a non powder day. We found some fresh turns and plenty of recycled and semi fresh. Even skied home to the cabin. It was hard to find bad snow.
Lines were too long for sure. 6 had a full corral at 3:17. Never seen that before. Didn't see a line of 10 all day. 4 was a shit show after our first run, but we didn't hang out for long.
And support SAC for sure. I read their forecast today.
