I'm not sure how long they had this planned for, but my backpack backup navigation phone with fatmap imagery downloaded is disabled.

The whole thing is slightly confusing tbh. They acquired FatMap - presumably because they felt that it extended their functions / reach. I can see the value of that - I use both apps and view them as an extension of one another when planning, navigating and logging activities in the mountains.

So having spent the money, why have they switched FatMap off? I can imagine that perhaps it is a much bigger task than anticipated to integrate the functions to Strava, but in that scenario I would imagine that they would have kept FatMap going so that they didn't force a whole load of their users to migrate to competitor services. So what's the issue - is FatMap losing money hand over fist? Are they struggling to get licences to some of the content that FatMap had?

Certainly with the upcoming ski season a lot of us are going to have to jump to competitor services and I imagine that many of us will drop our paid strava subscription as a result. Seems like an own goal. Anyway I do hope that they do complete the integration. I think it would make strava a more rounded tool. Failing that OnX - hurry up and get some more functionality in Europe pls.

Exactly the same things I've been trying to wrap my head around. I would totally understand it if they made Fatmap paid subscription only, but to shut it down when they have no viable alternative makes absolutely no sense. And I sure haven't seen any more features integrated into Strava in the last 4 days...

Now that the season has started, albeit somewhat slowly for us, interested to hear what has and hasn’t been working for people.

I read a short string suggesting Caltopo but haven’t really checked it out yet.

It's annoying that fatmap doesn't exist anymore.
I tried onx didn't work in Europe, where i ski 6 weeks a year.

Psyched about skimomap... thx for the heads up. Outmap was so-so. Didn't like that there's not a desktop version. I was having to cast from phone onto the TV to be able to see in detail on Outmap

So playing around with Skimomap. Figured out how to upload gpx routes ok. But then the only way I can see that route is to select it from "my routes". It seems like you can just see one route at a time? As in you can't just see all your routes in the area. Which is handy if you want to hit various freeride routes at a resort, and want to see where to go from a chair to hit various routes. Or am I just missing that option some how?

Depending on where you ski (Parts of Austria + Dolomites) RealityMaps has offline capabilities for the subscription version. The free version will let you use the cached data while offline. They use a very good DEM but have only limited winter imagery coverage. Where available, it's (way) better than Fatmap ever was.

I just checked SkiMoMaps and I'm seeing a mix of autumn and winter imagery with a quite shit DEM in the Alps.

I was playing around with the beta and while the UI is much better (it's a mess now) the cached data thing did not seem to work anymore, so maybe when the new version comes out it's less useful than it is now.

For planning at home in Austria check out also alpinemaps.org. Very high resolution DEM, still working on real snow.

Curious how well the Caltopo 3D visualization works? Appears to be available with the $50/year Pro version.
Asking cuz skimomap's winter imagery (at least for CO) is like early Oct - ie, barely snow.

It works for me. I switch between global imagery for more detailed terrain and Sentinel Hub satellite imagery that updates every 3 days. CalTopo user experience is pretty clunky especially on mobile. It has a lot of features on the desktop version for route planning. Another app that I’d recommend that feels better than Outmap or other new fatmap contenders is Footpath. It’s primarily targeted for hiking but it does have a mode for ski touring. The mobile ui is very streamlined. The paid version is only $29.99 and it also comes with Sentinel Hub with frequent updates. Unlike onX whose best features are limited to North America, Footpath appears to have good international coverage. Killian Jornet used it for mapping his Alps traverse. I found out about it by meeting the founder/developer backcountry skiing.

Ok good to know, thx. I'll check out Footpath. The issue with Outmap is there's no desktop version - or at least non-Mac desktop. I could (and have) cast onto a screen, but that gets pretty clunky itself.
