I work at the west end of the airport, couple miles from this fire. Not much smoke to be seen anymore... should be fine as long as it stays out of the timber.

A bit ago they had three helicopters working it with buckets, and an air-attack circling high.

All I can see now is a bit of charred grass on the ridge and the occasional helo through the haze. AQI ~150, not bad but not great.

Yeah, thankful to the air support (sounds like pulling water from Grant Cr.) and ground crews moving in fast. If it starts up TV mountain, could be very bad for snowbowl. There has been some thinning on the mid elevations of TV, but still lots of fuel in spots.

They're dipping from the pond at Grant creek ranch.

I'm concerned for the ski hill, too, especially when the cold front comes through later in the week and the winds kick to 30+ kts. Hiked up there yesterday and it's dry af, just like everything else around here.

Looks like the fire in Ruidoso was started by people. Saw this pop up on my phone, not something I've been following but that's fucked up. https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news...-wi-rcna163087

Been watching that; SIL's house in evacuation zone (they're out of the country at the moment).

The town of Jasper and Jasper National Park in Alberta, Canada are being evacuated and the route to the east has been cut off, so everyone has to head west into BC. Man, I hope this one isn't too bad. What an incredibly beautiful place.

    Getting worse in Oregon:

National Weather Service issues flash flood warning for Cow Valley, Durkee burn scars

VALE – Flash floods are forecast with heavy thunderstorms, Wednesday, July 24, in the Cow Valley and Durkee burn scars, according to the National Weather Service.

Residents in the recent burn scar areas are advised to watch for debris and mud flow with the expected heavy rainfall tomorrow.

Meanwhile additional resources are expected to pour into the region after the Federal Emergency Management Agency announced Tuesday, July 23, that it would funnel federal dollars to the region to battle the fast-moving Durkee Fire after the blaze was classified as a “major disaster.”

Also, Vale Bureau of Land Management crews are responding to a collection of fires triggered by lightning east of Interstate 84 between Crandall Creek and Richland in Baker County.

The group of fires is now called the Badlands Complex and consists of the Crandall, Gold Creek, Thompson, North Thompson, Wood Creek, Williams Creek, Daly, Sheep Mountain, Chalk, Timber Canyon, Powder and Coyote blazes.

As of the morning of Tuesday, July 22, the Thompson, North Thompson, Crandall and Gold Creek fires merged and are estimated at 10,000 acres five miles east of Durkee, according to the BLM.

The Coyote Fire is between the Snake River and Snake River Road, 5 miles southeast of Richland and is estimated to be at 1,500 acres.

According to the BLM, the Daly Fire, 11 miles northeast of Durkee and the Chalk Fire 5 miles southeast of Richland were contained Monday night.

The Northwest is getting a serious asskicking. Preparedness level 5 (out of 5) and a long list of uncontained fires. Vibes to them, and downwinders. There’s drift smoke from that and Canada (also getting asskicked) in northern NM.

Most of the Pacific Coast Trail between Crater Lake and Odell Lake is now closed. It’s not at all easy to reroute from there. Seems like every year thru-hikers are getting stranded by fire. That has to be reducing participation.

Question for the experts. Why is it that, even though AQI levels are in the “hazardous” range all day, the air smells way less noxious in the early AM compared to later in the day?

Just got back from early AM ride. AQI readings are ~160 (except for “official” reading at District Ranger Station where I swear the sensor is indoors) and no problem. If I tried that later in the day my eyes would burn and I could taste the smoke

Not wildfires but crikey we're having a lot of standing wheat fires. One down the road from me right now. Saw another to the south in Oregon on my way home from town. Yesterday there was one to east that took the combine. Yikes. I always hold my breath when my wheat gets harvested.

I sure feel for all of you out west in the fire areas.

Not an expert, but could take a wild ass guess at it. Most of the noxious chemicals are likely particulate. They may settle more during the colder temperatures of the morning. Coupled with warming temperatures creating more movement in the air column further suspending them. Guessing you are not seeing overnight temperatures going below the dew point.

We've been getting sporadic rain here at the Bench Lakes Fire for the past few days. Not enough to supress anything but it probably can't hurt. High winds now forecasted so we'll see what happens.

Been getting some insider info from these dudes, especially after my daughters baked a few hundred cookies for the crews. These guys are out of Duck Valley Reservation, NV. Super good dudes who work their tits off. The crew seems to be in good spirits and the camp is always hoppin'.

I would guess the humidity plays a part as well. Perhaps less irritating than the warm and dry smoke later in the day.

I follow a lot of fire related pages on Twitter and right now it’s my whole feed. Seems like the fires are multiplying at quite the rate. Who actually doesn’t have smoke in the West? Anyone?
