Very active bodybuilding forums shutdown without notice... is TGR next?

The decision was apparently made because of several reasons, such as declining engagement (despite the fact it was still very active) and the costs of maintaining the old software. The forum had also been under attack from spammers recently.

They had a section called the Misc, which was a less mature version of the padded room. Yes, that's possible.

Sad to see it go. The Misc in it's hey day really was the go to place to shit post and just have some great banter. If you searched virtually any topic in google, chances are you would find a thread about it on misc.

Is the TGR next? It seems we can't post pictures like we used to anymore. What's next?

Posting pics still works via Tapatalk, FWIW. But, yeah, between a dying format that isn't readily monetizable and aging unsupported software it definitely feels like like things could collapse like a dying star at any moment.

I have to think that it's tech talk and ski/snowboard that's keeping this place afloat.

Every other subforum in this place is the same ~100 people talking back and forth, which doesn't seem particularly attractive for advertising dollars. Sure, the padded room has a bunch of activity, but it's the same people posting about shit that no one outside this little bubble is ever going to see. TT and the ski forum actually have relevant information that'll ping in Google searches and bring in outside eyes, if not active participation.

Everybody click on that penis length enhancement banner 5 times! We'll show them monetization!

You guys see that banner, too, right?

There's about 10 people on here who don't have grey ball hair, the rest are yelling for the kids to get off their lawn. This place is dead.

If the ppl that actively use this place paid 100$ a year to have it all work well one would think that would do the trick

For all of us that use it and want to see it better it's a small price to pay. Let the lunkers and whoever else be free,

There are probably 300 ppl at least that would pay 100$ a year. That's 30 grand. That's got to be a decent amount of change for our dingleberry TRG wunderkinds.

Although 30 grand in Jackson is a couple nice dinners so what do I know

The alpine snowboard forum that I hang out on went to voluntary subscriptions a few years ago and it seems to be going fine. Costs about five bucks a month and you get a badge. I'd be happy to do that here just for the redfin gems content and the DIY advice

Not dying, just consolidating into reddit.

Yeah, no, not at all, which is why the subreddits for niche things are moribund, but you’ve always been a fucking idiot

Reddit's active user numbers have doubled in the past 5 years. You can complain about the quality of the content on there all you want, but the fact remains that 1) it is a forum, and 2) it is most definitely not dying.

Since this forum appears to be on the verge of imploding, just a reminder that a bunch of us are in “the powder zone” group on Facebook. Not a replacement but it’s for everyone to regroup to a new destination if necessary.

jesus you are fucking stupid. By your own argument the reason this forum is valuable - ski forum & tech talk - are content not well replicated on Reddit at all. The same dynamic exists for other niches, so, clearly, they haven’t all consolidated to Reddit.

Anybody ever given thought to setting up a subreddit called "TRG"?

It’s unfortunate that facebook, reddit, and discord are becoming the last men standing in tech consolidation.

I would imagine it wouldn’t be much of a bridge for us to figure out a self hosted option but I can imagine administrating the server would be a thankless task. Seems like the software is also a major issue, although self admin would allow us to bring back the tags.

    No, of course not.

But this place is dying because traffic is dwindling and new users are scarce. And one of the reasons for that is that reddit is massive, and is sucking traffic away from niche sites. New users looking for ski content end up there. Google searches for ski related questions end up there. All of that pulls views away from TGR. TGR has the better content, particularly in tech talk and ski / snowboard, but that only goes so far. The same goes for pretty much every other niche. Even someone as perfectly enlightened such as yourself has to understand that.

It's no different than any other consolidation: big juggernaut pulls in enough business to make the smaller, better competitors unsustainable.

The problem with reddit (as a reddit user for non skiing related stuff) as opposed to a forum , is it doesn't lend itself well to searchable Tech Talk stuff , and regional threads like in Ski /Snowboard. It's just the Topic / pic of the moment that rises to the top, and the up voting system leads to even more ridiculous groupthink than see here.

I search this place all the time as it contains a pretty remarkable array of info, that doesn't really work out on reddit.

The other problem with Reddit is it’s 50+% bots.
I’ve found the best way to search Reddit is by using Google and just tacking “Reddit” on to the end of your search terms.

I just thought it was sad that BB.com forums were closed without notice and closure to those that posted for so long.

I've also found that searching TGR is much more fruitful in a similar manner on Google:
