Yeah, as a non golfer, I'm conflicted. On paper, it seems like a great activity for old fucks. But all the golfers I actually know aren't very healthy.

Your local knee surgeon heard that and then bought a new boat.

No, he bought a new set of clubs. Talk about golfers! Is there a 'pod who doesn't golf?

The inlaws came to town. 70 yo dad's game is golf, but pickle ball is his new thing. And there are a couple courts in town I guess. We had to join a waitlist just to have a shot at playing. It is popular as hell I had no idea.

This is some good shit so far I'm glad it got traction. But what do you do if you're too much of an asshole to seek community, too lazy to take on some crazy outdoor odyssey project? I have realized recently I am generally happier with a project to work on. I know a guy that took up sewing, which seems useful. I want to take a continuing ed class in TIG welding but like, for hobbysts not tradespeople. My job keeps getting in the way. Same thing happened when I was working on my pilots license. That, and I realized I'd rather wait to fly an electric VTOL than a 50 year old Cessna.

Anyway. Anyone have any luck with "learn cool shit" night school?

Dude, I seriously learned to weld via YouTube. Ya just gotta take the first step and do it. There will always be a million reasons not to.

So I tried this! MIG I have a basic grasp of. So I got a machine, I watched some videos, got my torch all set...and proceeded to absolutely murder whatever piece I touched. Specifically aluminum holy shit what a fickle bitch.

I need like, pointers and real time feedback.

Retirement sucks unless you do something you love on a regular basis. I'm redefining my goals to help others dealing with Dementia but I need to do something new and welding would be cool for learning how to work on cars. Doing some resto-mod is something I've left on the back burner far too long.

I guess my point is to have purpose and then reward yourself with some goal you've never done before.
If you shoot for the stars and hit the moon you've done good.

    Cool thread btw.

actualy that's what the local ( only 2.5 hrs away ) orthopedic surgeon does he goes fishing, he would be too obese to walk a golf course

I thot i read that you don't need to move as much in pickle ball which is especialy good for seniors so it might be easier on the body ??

My mom plays a ton of pickle ball. If it was bad for knees, she would be toast. She's 71 and even teaches people to play. Wherever she goes she looks up the local club and gets a game in and makes a ton of elderly friends. It is pretty cool. My dad drinks bloody marrys and watches. ha

Think about out-of-shape old folks, with poor muscle tone, declining coordination and balance but an undiminished competitive mindset from when they were 25 yrs old playing a sport that requires quick changes of direction, twisting and bending on a hard grippy playing surface.

It is easier on your shoulders than tennis though.

Well, she played tennis her whole life so maybe that has helped.

Half a dozen friends have taken up pickle ball, three of them
have hurt themselves, one guy tangled his foot in the net strap and dislocated his shoulder. Who knows how. I play tennis and golf and it’s all good still. Competitive ping pong kills the knees though. Side to side pushing off. Had to quit.
