    2024 Northern BC thread

Hey why not. After all it was good news at Shames last weekend. We managed to get enough accumulation to stay above the crust and there was acceptable visibility for most of the last couple of days. Tri-ungulate came for a visit, so super fun to show him around a bit. A fine house guest and super nice guy.

Day one we skied a north bowl, then headed back up fish and chips to a saddle then did powder eights.

Riding a T Bar with Tri-ungulate again! During the Tbar ride we had a very hearty chuckle when reminiscing about my Tbar ride with Carvehard in Andermatt last year. Oh Brian, your Tbar Freeride exploits amaze and amuse to this day!

With another north bowl under our belt we headed up to the saddle and then along the ridge to drop a Fish and Chips. Another wonderous day at Shames.

Monday the hill was closed so I convinced Tri-ungulate to drive up the Nass to the Hotsprings. Nice soak in the pools with a couple that Tri had met heliskiing and on the way home (at the peeing tree), we spied a shit ton (I believe that is the correct nomenclature) of eagles in the trees.

All in all a very good meeting with a very good mag and some pretty decent turns in the Shames BC over the weekend.

An excellent time was had in Terrace.

Thanks gary, you and Shames absolutely rock!

Also, kudos to the Northern Escape team, they were everything I could expect from a well-run op and a great (and relatively affordable) way to pop my heliskiing cherry.

I'll try to put together a mini-TR if I have the time.

Yes please do if you have the time. I’ve driven by there many times - would love to hear what you experienced. Guess you got out before the cold temps really settled in?

Got lucky Lee, twice in two days, fresh tracks each time top to bottom.

In Northern BC, even the sidecountry doesn't get skied out.

Gotta say that North Bowl was as good or better than any of the heli drops I got with Northern Escape.

Did you know, Hudson Bay Mountain offer sall pass holders a free lesson with their season pass (Until Han 1st). Took advantage and got the kiddos a snowboarding lesson last Saturday. They liked it but they were happily back on their skis for ski club on Sunday.

Me and a buddy scored one of the Last Frontier 50% off deals and will be in Terrace Tue night before we head up to Stewart Wed AM.
Recommendations or options for dinner in Terrace after 8 PM?
    Thanks!

The article linked above says that the helicopter was owned by the heli ski operation. Is this standard? I'd always assumed heli outfits just contracted out the flying to helicopter companies.

Tragic. I thought the koalas they used were not owned by them but I don't know for certain.

Terrible loss to families and the town.

We looked into skiing a day at Shames but in and out on Tuesdays killed that plan.
Probably too crunched for time, we're back in Terrace Mon night then outta there on the AC 5:30 flight early the next AM

CBC said it was “operated by” which I think is different than owned by.

    Shitty day. No words

Yeah leased, not owned by Northern Escape.
I'm crushed, they're such a good op, and they really made every effort to make sure we flew safely.
Not cowboys in the least, they wanted us to go skiing but were not afraid to shut things down if weather or viz was suboptimal.
We had a very experienced local pilot (hope Evan is okay) and they were meticulous in their maintenance.
I'm so sad for those lost and injured.

To what Tri said. I only know Yellowhead Heli as the operator/owner of helicopters in the area so speak to them. They know the terrain, the weather and have flown safelyin the area for industrial,. for safety, for transportation for years. This is so sad for all involved

EDIT to clarify - Skyline Helicopters was the operator/owner involved.
