of course, there is zero chance he is a top 4 catcher for the next decade.

The biggest sin for an NFL front office is paying for past performance. The corresponding sin in baseball is to pay for past performance over a term of 10 years or more.

he could be a useful dh / 1b at that price if he can’t play catcher for ten years.

his stats are quite good, jorge posada-esque you might say.

Bigger number tonight: fans inside Oakland Coliseum, or fans outside Oakland Coliseum protesting the move of the team?

oh, I didn't mean to imply that it is a bad deal. Of course, any 10 year deal comes with risk but the AAV of this one is low enough that it feels fairly safe, especially for a wealthy franchise. But the notion that because he is a "top 4" catcher now, the Dodgers just locked up "a top 4 catcher for the next 10 years" is fallacious. Because there is zero chance he is top 4 for the next 10 years, and probably won't even be top 4 for the next 5, based on how catchers deteriorate. He may still add value as a DH/1B for a few years, but likely not 10 years from now. That doesn't make it a bad signing, the Dodgers know all of this and he's going to be underpaid for the next few years in exchange for being grossly overpaid at the end of the contract.

There’s 10 years of paying for him on the team, and deferred compensation at $5 mil a year through 2043. He turned 29 today, insane deferred comp.

Smith is 29 and will probably be right around an all-star level catcher for another 3-5 years. Then he will be a solid 1B (or potentially 3B) for another 3-4 years, and then be an old dude for 2 years. All for a $12.3 million cap hit. Not too shabby.

Now onto the topic of actual baseball:

Miles Mikolas on March 16th: “We’re not exactly a low payroll team, but you got the Dodgers playing checkbook baseball. We’re going to be the hardest working group of Midwestern farmers we can be. … It would be great to stick it to the Dodgers.”

Miles Mikolas on March 28th at Chavez Ravine: 4.1 innings, 7 hits, 5 runs and 2 walks. Good enough for sweet 10.38 ERA.

    He helped em cover.

Was a beautiful day at the Ravine and our man Arty was there.

DIdnt watch the game but saw condensed recap with my son and damn the Dodgers look good.

Homefield announcers on MLB didn't mention Shohei and gambling once....

Anybody have T-Mobile and doesn’t want their free MLB.tv subscription that comes with it? Happy to buy a few beers for somebody that isn’t going to use theirs. I guess it’s per line too, so if your kid or wife has T-Mobile you can see their code and keep yours for free baseball streaming.

    MLB 2024 Thread

If Rodon comes out tossing grapefruits today he’s going to have a brutal homecoming next week.

    worst pitching deals ever:

    Pavano
    Strasburg
    Rodon
    ???

    eta

nelson cruz retiring with 464 home runs today. nice career.

That was the most runs I’d ever seen in a single inning live. A couple of those pitchers are going to have huge ERAs for a bit.

Well Phillies/ATL turned out to not be that interesting this weekend, other than Harper trying to immediately go on the IL with this

The dude is a maniac. I wish he was on my team.

Gotta love the Mets trying to get revenge on a clean slide by throwing at Hoskins in his 4th at bat the next day. And missing him by 4’. It may be opening weekend but the Mets are in midseason form.
