My wife and I realized today that it was her Dad’s fifteenth birthday. Curious to hear how he remembers it.

    Yessir.

Neither of us ever realized it happened on his birthday. I’ve only known him 3 years so I have a better excuse. My wife never knew what day Kennedy was assassinated. She’s not a big history buff. We’re headed to see him tomorrow. He’s a very soft spoken but highly intelligent guy, high school English teacher for 30+ years. I’m sure it made a big impression.

Kennedy assassination is the 1st concrete memory I have that I can reliably pull up. 2nd grade. It made an impression that was shallow but lasting.
I have been in this State for 30 years and I am willing to admit that I am part of the problem.

The space shuttle Challenger disaster was a bit like that for me. I had just turned ten a couple weeks before it happened. First world event I remember watching on tv. Although we had a mock election in ‘84 at the elementary school, Reagan vs, Mondale. I remember that, too.

I watched that standing in line to get on a plane. Not going to say it didn't give me a second of hesitation walking onto that sardine can.
Hit NH a bit differently with Christa on board.

That was the hardest part. Being a school age kid we had all followed the selection process quite closely. I think most schools had a teacher apply. We had a teacher make it through to the interviews.

We had an interesting conversation over dinner about the Kennedy assassination. A teacher from the high school I graduated from was a well respected authority on the assassination. I never took his class, but I do remember he did not believe there was evidence of conspiracy.

My first real memory in my life is the funeral on TV, the riderless horse behind the caisson with the casket, and my mother crying and crying -my Dad at work as always I guess - and 3-year-old me trying to console her somehow.

Well, now that the big brain has weighed in with the Bill Hicks proof the debate is over

My memory of JFK is they HS ended early and girls were crying on the bus.

Earliest news memory was watching the McCarthy hearings before there was color tv.

I was home from school sick that day watching television when JFKs assassination was announced . My mom loaded me into the car to go to the doctor and I told her but she didn't believe me and we started to the doctors office. Partway there, it came on the radio and my mom pulled over and cried. I don't really remember anything that day after that.

With regard to the conspiracies, I never paid much attention to it, except it always seemed weird how the investigation was kept secret as well as the CIA-Oswald connections and the murder by Ruby. According to several reviewers, including the recent Rob Reiner one, there were more wounds than could be explained by the single shooter theory.

Best explanation I've heard for wounds vs shooters is that one of the Secret Service detail tried to return fire against Oswald and badly bungled it, prompting the feds to be so secretive about it, which fueled the conspiracies. They didn't want to admit that they fucked up.

I had a semester-long course in High School that was completely about the assassination. We read all the available source material, saw hundreds -maybe thousands- of pics, watched the Zapruder film over and over and frame-by-frame,listened to and studied tons of acoustic evidence, read and watched lots of stuff about Mafia and CIA involvement, and on and on.

The teacher never once gave an opinion on any of it, he just presented the material and asked questions. There was only one test, at the end. And on it there was only one question: "What happened?"

    ^ That seems pretty cool.

It happened that my family lived in DC at the time of the assassination, and I was going to Sidwell Friends school. A bunch of politicians’ kids were there - like Kennedys and McNameras. The whole elementary school was in an assembly for something quiet, when the doors flew open with a huge bang and lots of guys in dark suits hustled in, grabbed the politicians’ kids, and hustled out. We got let out early a few minutes after that, and heard the news.

My folks were pretty shook and worried about riots, so I had to stay in all weekend which was the big impact for me.

There’s a whole other thread on that and it had very little to do with skiing.

Not sure that "Why not?" would be an A-level answer to the question, "What happened?". "Who knows?" might have worked, though.

Dan, it was about making up your own mind so there was no specific correct answer, it was about deciding and then making a case for your decision. Pretty sure my answer involved the Teamsters, West Virginia and the Mafia and discounted the single-bullet BS.

The stuff with the guy with the umbrella was pretty freaky I recall.

That’s just me making an obscure reference to an old urban legend - nothing to do with what sounded like a great high school course/teacher. I didn’t get any teaching in critical thinking in high school - just straight up regurgitate facts.

There was a movie called Bonano that taught me all about it, and Bobby as I recall. Seemed plausible, and a good mob flick.
Wasn’t alive yet, but sounded like some tricky times for the world.
