Hey New Yawkers! (Where To Stay?)

So, most of my formative years were in and around NYC (roughly 78-85). I knew the city extremely well then (for a teenager). It’s a different place now, so I hear!
Wifey wants to do a Broadway play, with two nights in the city.
I don’t want to stay above about 14th street, as my memories of mid town/theatre district, etc are not of the “hey, let’s just walk around, and find some crazy cool restaurants!” .
My parents had a place on 81st and Columbus through most of the 00’s, so I know UWS, and want something more dynamic, neighborhood wise (but safe).
I was thinking Chinatown, Bowery/St. Marks, LWS, but I could use some advice.
We have Marriott Friends and Family, but there might be other reasonable opportunities.
    Thoughts off the top?

Yeah, I’m not so concerned with safety as much as avoiding a corporate, mid-town tourist experience. Like, I wanna take my kid out for a proper slice at 3:00 AM, find whatever bit of funk that might be left.
But yeah, Christopher St. Might be fun.

Below 14th st, The Gansevoort or The Standard come to mind.

    These are two favorites.

Gild Hall in the Financial District and The Beekman nearby are nice. Close to the Seaport.

More towards midtown I like The Library and if going full midtown you can’t go wrong with The Pierre.
I still call it The Jake.

Crosby St Hotel is right where you want to be but it's pricey.

Stay at the 1 Hotel, in Brooklyn next to the Brooklyn Bridge. That area is hopping. Way more fun than lower Manhattan at night.

so as someone how spent a decade and a half in and around hotels in NYC Heres what I think with the Marriot hook
Of course I lived and worked in Midtown too and love Hells Kitchen but get your distaste for some of it.

Moxy Downtown (Ann St) is where I stay for work when in the city. Cool hotel, can book with Marriott points. Walk to 9/11 memorial, Seaport, Battery Park. Easy access to midtown on multiple subway lines.

Anybody ever been to Avant Gardner in Brooklyn? Neighborhood looks pretty sketch in a barren industrial way, wondering about getting out of there after a show we're going to in a few weeks. Also, anybody ever stay at the William Vale hotel in Williamsburg by any chance?

    You'd probably just dissolve.

Three's a late show and an early show, we're going to the early one, I've been thinking enough people would be showing up in cabs for the late show that we could grab one of them, but if that doesn't work out we'd be kinda fucked so I'm trying to come up with a better plan.

You might pay, but Uber/Lyft should work. Or, you’re a 12 minute walk to the L train.

If you take the train, you might even run into a Diplo after-party…

This was at the station you’d take.
