I have a 2018 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium with 98,000 miles. Second owner, bought with low miles (believe first owner was a lease). Well maintained overall.
Yesterday, with no major event noted, my entire dash lit up with check engine warning and no eyesight warning (and everything that goes with it — lane keep, lane assist, RAB, radar). Car drives fine — no shut down advisement or auto shut off protection occurred. Drove it over to auto zone to have them pull codes (Subaru dealership wanted $175 to pull the codes; that’s crazy). Based on some reading, I thought it was going to be something simple like a gas cap not tight enough (removed, retightened gas cap and did three startup cycles, no dice). To my surprise, when they pulled the codes, it came back as “Code P05A2 — Active Grill Shutter - A - Control Circuit” (open position) + a secondary ABS ECU error code. Based off further reading to see if it was just faulty, I did a battery disconnect which did successfully reset the EyeSight functionality and removed to Check Engine Warning Light. Ran codes again but it came back with the same warning code except it was now “Code P05A2 — Active Grill Shutter SECONDARY DTS.”
All of that said, I wanted to know if anyone more mechanically experienced than me has come across this issue, and:
- what did you do about it
- could I fix it myself
- is it worth getting repaired since it’s just a service bulletin and not a recall
I know a lot of people but realized last night I don’t know any mechs. So, I am posting here since I know the TGR community is quite knowledgeable! Thanks, mags!
ps: thought tech talk was only for ski gear. Posted in padded room but I upset the jack off cycle of a couple folks so I am reposting here haha. Forever a jong.
