Who is mounting where?

It's almost October... the time for stupid discussions on stupid topics. So here we go.

How many people are mounting skis behind the rec line, how many on the line, and how many in front of the line? If a ski has a range of mount points, use your judgement.

I never ski backwards, consider myself a "directional" skier (though I would NOT say a charger), and I'm consistently liking most skis on the forward end of the range.

This is not manufacturer specific... volkl blaze 106 at +2, salomon rocker 2 122 at +1, Dynastar proto at +1... moving my bmt 122 from on the line to +1... moving my blaze 86 from +1 to +2.

The only ski I own that I like best on the rec line is my ancient rocker 2 100s.

-11 and -2 are too extreme for most people. That puts you plenty in the directional area even with forward mounts on your sticks.

Several of mine are at the line in -5 to -7, Bodes went +1 out of necessity but are definitely enjoyed there. Only the mantras went on the line way back. What i'm seeing is the stiffer the tail, the more rear I want the mount. Forward mount equals a centered balance and more upright stance, which makes a backseat trip more common and getting stood up on a long tail that doesn't budge is not fun. Hence i'm feeling the Vice 113 may want to go back a bit.

It's mostly that simple..Manu tends to know where their ski works best at, so I run with it until proven otherwise.

If I really want to break it down further, skiing style and snow type also influence it. Hardpack wanting aggressive edge control and grounded skiing makes a lot of ski up front ideal because the fun is from going fast and having smooth flow in turns. Softer, and i'm more likely to get airborne and 'savor' the good snow so the style shifts to more playful and gentler, and want more support on off-balance landings, etc.

I have most stuff mounted on the rec line. Corvus, Devastators (179, 184), and Nocta. 22/23 Nomad 115 mounted +2 (-7 from true center). For my skiing style I find the Crows to perform best on the line.

I like skis from -4 to -7 of true center. My BC120's are -1. My Enforcer 110's are +1. Everything else is on the line and in that range.

I’m coming around to mounting relative to the sidecut, and adjusting for how I’m going to be skiing that particular ski. So maybe a more firm snow focused all-mountain ski where I still want to drive the tips some, I’m at 56% of sidecut in front, whereas a powder ski where I want it more playful and will be skiing it more upright, I’m at 54% of sidecut in front.

FWIW, recommended mount point on the R87 I finally put bindings on is about 56.4% back on the sidecut. Went with recommended on that one.

I think it’s also useful to consider the skier the recommended mount point is thinking of, and whether you’ll be skiing that ski differently. Like a Black Ops 118 has a pretty forward mount point, but there’s nothing about the shape of that ski that suggests you couldn’t move the mount point back a few cm, it’s just that they’re targeting a freestyle oriented skier with them, so the recommended line is where it will work for that skier type.

well the way to figure where to mount a powder ski is to ask on-line, some guy with his pants hanging off his ass will say " I mounted at blah blah and it was great "

so if your pants hang off your ass ... that's ^^ where you mount

I havent mounted anything in awhile but its usually at the line or sometimes at the line +2 cm

but never behind the line cuz IME the ski bogs like a ski boat that won't get on plane
